Na Lani O Maui. Jim Kimo West has just released a new slack key album, Na Lani O Maui. While earlier CDs may have songs in tunings that are, shall we say, not exactly standards, this CD is mostly in Taro Patch (although tuned lower), with some in C Major (Attas C), and one in C Moana Loa. One song in particular shows off his virtuosity - Howd Ya Do. This very traditional song is most always done on a steel guitar. Jim does great credit to this wonderful song. Sonny Chillingworth has to be the turn-around king. Ive been listening to a couple of Sonny CDs for a couple of years now. But that seems to be ALL I did - listen to the music as a whole. Im a software developer by trade, and I use slack key as background music (in headphones) for a large part of my day. Slack key makes wonderful programming music. What a great player - makes the complex seem so easy and natural. And he does this while he is singing. I am in awe of such capability. Na Lani O Maui.

Up to now, I havent really owned any Jim West music. Oh sure, I have him on 3-4 compilation CDs, but I havent really owned a complete CD. I cant remember what I heard, but something made me go to Amazon and download one of his albums. The album inspired me to want to learn to play some of these songs, but alas, no liner notes. Since I downloaded from Amazon, no liner notes. When I cant figure out the tuning by myself, I usually turn to the liner notes to help. But, no such luck here. My name is Keli'ikul...

After 4-5 years playing Slack Key, I wanted to start singing some of the music, not just play instrumentals. Don't get me wrong, Slack Key is still my main interest. But I noticed that there was generally not a lot of overlap with 'ukulele hula style mele. So I got an 'ukulele from a good friend of mine, and started learning. My name is Keli'ikuloa (Jim) Scott, and I'm a haole. Started playing Slack Key, and now: Hula, Language, Culture, Crafts. Who knows where it will lead. Na Lani O Maui.

About Haole Slack Key
http://www.haoleslackkey.com/about
Of course a haole can play Slack Key! It's possible for anyone to pluck a guitar string in a Slack Key kind of fashion. But there's more to Slack Key than just the strings. Living remote from anything even resembling Polynesian, I have to make do. I'm not sure I look forward to meeting another 'real' slack player because, let's face it - I don't even know how to pronounce some of the songs I have learned (Salomila? Two years before I got that pronunciation correct). Dennis Lake - Luthier Extraordinaire.

Dont know about how anyone else learns to play, but I have to practice some things more than just a few times. Part of learning slack key for me is collecting turn-arounds. I figure I just cant have enough of them in my bag of tricks. So as I was listening to Sonny Chillingworth (for the thousandth time), I heard a turn-around I didnt have. Of course, I wish it were easier - maybe others pick things up quicker. But this seems to what I need to do to learn to play some things. Na Lani O Maui.

Im a haole, of course. If you have read any of the posting here, it is evident. I started learning slack key 3-4 years ago (2009-ish). I heard the lovely song by Ozzie Kotani, Kuu Kika Kahiko and just had to buy a guitar. Since then, I have had many interactions with some of the revered elders (so to speak) of the slack key world, and without exception, have met with nothing but encouragement and great aloha. Getting ready for the Patrick Landeza Slack Key Immersion, I discovered we needed a T-Shirt for the event. Interesting, I thought - custom T-Shirts. This WAS a production. I love this site. The shirts are located at the Ukulele T-Shirt Company. They have a full selection of products that are generally ukulele themed. This is an example of one of the T-Shirts. They have sizes and colors, and, based on what I read, are printed on demand. Interesting concept. Need T-Shirts for a family reunion?
