Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa: A Taste of Burundi
http://davemcalpine.blogspot.com/2012/08/a-taste-of-burundi.html
Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa. Monday, 6 August 2012. A Taste of Burundi. Rows of French baguettes. Perfectly soft custard puffs. Black-and-white-chequered floor. Credence Clearwater Revival. Creaky overhead fans. Wafts of fresh roasted coffee. Burundi. Sure. With hints of French, whiffs of African and a pervasive texture of craziness, a taste of Burundi was a tiny but intense sensory experience. And like all great tasters, it only whet the appetite for more. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa: April 2012

Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa. Wednesday, 25 April 2012. 8220;You say slavery has been abolished. But has. 8216;Yes. Watch Amistad.’. Saturday, 14 April 2012. Thursday, 5 April 2012. A Blaize in Ouagadougou. Monday, 2 April 2012. Light it Up, Burkina. Today is 'World Autism Awareness Day' - not as big as, say, 'Breast Cancer Awareness Day' or even the lesser known 'Pink Cowry Masks for Funsies Day' (its a Burkina Faso thing) but by no means is it less important. One of the offshoots of our trip is to raise...

Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa: July 2012
http://davemcalpine.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa. Monday, 30 July 2012. The Ghosts of Rwanda. The countryside is magnificent but is home to no less ghosts than the urban centres. The epic Virunga Volcanoes in the north: the area where the Tutsi rebels came in to Rwanda from to end the genocide. The azure waters of Lake Kivu: where a million fleeing Hutus formed the largest refugee camp in history. The perpetual blue haze that floats around Rwanda's thousand hills is like the aimless drifting of souls in limbo. I suppose its ...

Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa: On Ancient Winds
http://davemcalpine.blogspot.com/2012/09/on-ancient-winds.html
Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa. Tuesday, 11 September 2012. The dhow was the link between all these things. It, and Captain Seriji's animated conversations with himself. Mine were just a few of the infinite experiences carried on those ancient trade winds and in those ancient dhows. None-the-less mine felt pretty unique. I'm pretty sure I ate less fish. And had a lot more full-frontal nudity. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Footage from the Journey. School for Autistic Children. View my complete profile.

Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa: September 2012
http://davemcalpine.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa. Tuesday, 25 September 2012. So after four solid days and zero solid stools aboard Mozambiques finest roadworthy buses I have finally arrived home. South Africa's dual carriageways opened up in front of my eyes like the Red Sea. Goat numbers dwindled and road rage quadrupled as Joburg's rutted skyline came into view. Ponte's neon lights have never looked sweeter. And South Africa has never seemed more developed. Here are some of the stats. Final Mileage: 26,607kms. Worst Momen...

Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa. Wednesday, 23 May 2012. The Good, the Bad and the Holy. I am an official guide! 8221; trailing behind him. An everyday occurrence. Where angels and humans boogie together, where demons are smite down, where visions result in the creation of the worlds most improbable places of worship, where the impossible is somehow possible. These churches deserve so much better. Wednesday, 16 May 2012. Finally there are our eating habits. Cutlery is not big in Africa so we have become ...

Sunburn: McAlpine in Africa. Saturday, 28 January 2012. Problems in the Atlas. Mohammed, we have never used proper mountaineering gear - is it a good idea to start to get the hang of it on those white, Mordor-like slopes? Its no problem.". Mohammed, its below freezing and my glove has just blown into that crevasse". Its no problem.". Mohammed - my crampons aren't getting enough purchase and I'm sliding down this 80 degree rock face.". Its no problem.". Mohammed, have you seen "Touching the Void? Oh, and ...
