Stanford@SEA: Changing States

http://stanfordatsea.blogspot.com/2015/06/changing-states.html

Friday, June 5, 2015. It was a dark and stormy night. I woke up to a voice whispering my name from the blackness. It's windy with a light rain," the voice informed me. "You might want to bring your foulies.". Okay thanks," I mumbled. I heard footsteps retreating as I checked my watch. 2:28. Twenty-two minutes until I needed to be on deck for turnover. I closed my eyes for ten more minutes before forcing myself to sit up and throw on the clothes I had balled up in a corner at the foot of my bunk. Ten minu...

Stanford@SEA: May 2011

http://stanfordatsea.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 30, 2011. Following the Birds Home. Does it say something about how much food is in the water they soar above? From previous trips SEA has taken to Kiritimati, and she knows that students onboard are often studying birds on SEA trips. Friday, May 27, 2011. From Palmyra to Christmas Island. A booby escort from Palmyra. A bit of play. Sailing through a squall. Now we're about to enjoy three days in our final port of call before turning the ship North to sail home to Honolulu. When Laura Cumming...

Thursday, April 30, 2015. From Land to Sea. Stanford@SEA 2015 on the steps of the Agassiz Building. And set off on an adventure that will stretch us so far past our limits that we will likely see the world, and ourselves, a bit differently by the end of it. During our time at Hopkins, we have been taking three different classes to prepare for our voyage:. Maritime Studies –. Nautical Science –. Our next blog post will appear in about a week, as it will take a few days to transport ourselves, our carefull...

Stanford@SEA: Life at Sea

http://stanfordatsea.blogspot.com/2015/06/doug-dunbar-photo-by-b.html

Saturday, June 6, 2015. Doug Dunbar (photo by B. Block). Compensating for the motion of a ship underway manifests itself in many ways. Appetites increase, but weight is not gained, eating meals off the gimbaled tables involves many crunches to maintain a constant range (distance) off your plate. Sleeping in your bunk requires a strategically braced leg to prevent yourself from falling out or crumpling up in a corner. A sailing sunset (photo by Nick Mendoza). June 7, 2015 at 6:10 PM. And a gray mist on th...

Stanford@SEA: A Pinprick of Green

http://stanfordatsea.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-pinprick-of-green.html

Monday, June 1, 2015. A Pinprick of Green. A local fisherman paddles out past the forereef on Fanning. We are anchored off of Fanning, about a cable’s length from shore, between what the chart calls Danger Point and an old shipwreck. We had our first real squalls of the trip last night, signaling our introduction to the ITCZ, but the wind and swells are now gentle and the clouds are beginning to break. The start of a typical snorkel mission. Looking out at Fanning, one feels as if transported to an elabo...
