Stanford in Guyana

Friday, July 17, 2009. July 15, 2009. Of Caribbean airlines were vastly exceeded and Continental was consistently early. I am not sure why I tend to select anything but Continental when given the choice. They have fine on-time arrival rates, good service, comfortable seats, never seem to be full, play multiple free movies, and still serve food. I don’t travel to the southeast much anymore, but they have definitely moved up my list. We found this sign that could be a sound entry to the FAIL blog. Well, th...

Stanford in Guyana: July 7, 2009

http://www.stanfordinguyana.blogspot.com/2009/07/july-7-2009.html

Friday, July 10, 2009. July 7, 2009. Got up at 6, showered, ironed and looked at my lecture materials. Mark and I met for breakfast at 6:40, but it wasn’t open until 7…when we were supposed to leave. Our driver waited and we ate anyway. This did not put us behind, since we were the first to arrive by a solid 20 minutes. This was not surprising for the day after a holiday. They were essentially little shrimp omelets. July 11, 2009 at 6:51 AM. After shrimp egg-roll literally being eggs rolled in shrimp, I ...

http://www.stanfordinguyana.blogspot.com/2009/07/july-9-2009.html

Saturday, July 11, 2009. July 9, 2009. Today during tea break we were interviewed by the local media. I am not sure if it was TV or print but there was a video camera and they took some footage of Mark reviewing the workshop. They primarily asked about our purpose, what we are teaching about and if there is more training planned. We walked back (again, about half a mile). A horse trailer offered us a ride. We considered it but I hesitated to long and probably for the better. The embassy has a...That food...

Wednesday, July 8, 2009. Monday July 6, 2009. After that the day settled down. Customs went without issue and we were picked up by an embassy vehicle. A couple interesting things on the trip to the airport. We encountered a bike race shortly after leaving the airport. Two cyclists were just trying to distance themselves from the peleton of 30 bikers. There was also one immediately apparent difference between this trip and my last visit to Guyana. We had arrived during the rainy season [1]. We went to man...

Stanford in Guyana: July 8, 2009: The Sea Wall

http://www.stanfordinguyana.blogspot.com/2009/07/july-8-2009-sea-wall.html

Friday, July 10, 2009. July 8, 2009: The Sea Wall. It was probably my hardest day of lecture, with 2 very technical lectures in the program I don’t write. But it went pretty well. Mark lost power during his lecture. This is something that happens teaching overseas. Fortunately it happened during a lecture (and not a workshop) and the generator kicked in quickly. After class we decided to start walking around immediately in the hopes of getting to a restaurant [1]. Most of the sea wall is deceptively wide...

Stanford in Paraguay: March 2011

http://stanfordinparaguay.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 31, 2011. Day 8: Iguazu Falls. The most obvious difference between Paraguay and Argentina was the rainforest. Southeastern Paraguay is the soy belt, and is an agricultural monoculture. But we had not been in Argentina for many kilometers before these fields gave way to bonafied rain forests (which seemed particularly appropriate as it was actively raining [2]. Then, we got on a little train and a long boardwalk to the western falls. A few pictures of the team. A couple downtown pictures.

Stanford in Paraguay: Days 4-5: Food Adventures

http://stanfordinparaguay.blogspot.com/2011/03/days-4-5-food-adventures.html

Friday, March 25, 2011. Days 4-5: Food Adventures. After the first night, we had the odd cultural experience of negotiating multiple invitations to dinner (between two groups that roughly seemed to break down into the out of town Paraguayans and the Brazilians [1]. Which created the conditions for decades of totalitarian rule. One dictator acquired the ‘distinction’ of the second longest reign among dictators in the modern world. But all of them share bemusement about Guyana. Asked Guillermo. Not eno...

Stanford In Kenya

Thursday, October 2, 2008. Wednesday October 1, 2008. About this phenomena). The students said that Kenya is 30% Muslim at lunch yesterday (which is lower than I thought) but most of the Muslim population lives in the north part of the country. My class has no Muslims [1]. But it is totally doable for a few days. I have met a couple Christians who were excited to see the MA Theology line on my bio. Others (particularly professors) described themselves as ethnically Christian but actually ‘nothi...This is...
