davidSmalley » Ready for Ruby 1.9?

http://static.davidsmalley.com/2009/02/05/ready-for-ruby-1-9

Litmus: Painless web site and email testing. Ready for Ruby 1.9? Team launched a site to help out. Has a full import of the Rubyforge gem repository and lets you leave comments and your opinion of whether a particular gem is ready for Ruby 1.9. I’ve got a ton of features I’d like to add to make the user experience much better and make the huge task of ensuring we’re ready for Ruby 1.9 that little bit easier to co-ordinate. Please drop by our forum. If you have any suggestions for the site.

Litmus: Painless web site and email testing. Shout - at a glance status. Inspired by a recent 37 Signals blog post A peek at In/Out, an internal app at 37signals,. We decided this would be great for the Litmus. Team as well. A quick glance overview of what everyone is working on at this moment in time. Not wanting to go too overboard and create something we never went and updated, we decided to tie it into Twitter. Was the framework of choice for this little web app. Using the Twitter Gem. Cool – I...

Litmus: Painless web site and email testing. Allow some paths when your app is in maintenance. Those of you who already follow Ezra's great guidance on setting up nginx. As a front end to a mongrel cluster will know that it already includes a nice block to enable maintenance mode when you trigger it in capistrano (creates a /shared/system/maintenance.html page and rewrites all requests to it). See an example nginx config which implements this. Based on Ezra's original. One important thing to note.

davidSmalley » Hpricot Case Sensitivity

http://static.davidsmalley.com/2008/04/24/hpricot-case-sensitivity

Litmus: Painless web site and email testing. Recently we were trying to use the awesome Hpricot. To do some HTML parsing. Problem is that Hpricot doesn't easily allow you to do case insensitive searches for elements. This means that we're missing any element where someone has placed an uppercase character in the tag we're explcitly looking for. David Smalley, Ruby hacker based in Leeds, UK. This problem has been talked about on the Mofo Mailing List. And even on the Hpricot challenge page.

http://static.davidsmalley.com/2009/09/18/talk-at-nwrug-on-rails-and-varnish

Litmus: Painless web site and email testing. Talk at NWRUG on Rails and Varnish. Last night I talked at the Northwest Ruby User Group. On the subject of caching with Rails and Varnish, and our experiences with Doctype. As promised I’m going to post the talk and our varnish config file -I don’t know if the notes will make much sense, I tend to make brief notes relevant to me to remind me on what to say next. Hopefully you get the gist. Sorry, comments are closed for this article. North West Ruby User Group.

Git deployment workflow using tags — hello beardy

http://davidsmalley.com/git-deployment-workflow-using-tags

Lovely to meet you. Git deployment workflow using tags. Up until now we’ve been hacking git branches to handle our master - QA - staging - production workflow. This meant that the typical development to production deploy required a sequence like:. Cap staging deploy - check site in. Staging - git checkout. This was a tiresome process and, something told me, a rather unnecessary one. It was time to investigate Git tags. The terminology used in the capistrano config file is rather misleading. If I was feel...

Better than nothing — hello beardy

Lovely to meet you. While you think your competition is that woman across town, it’s probably apathy, sitting still, ignoring the problem… nothing. Better than nothing – Seth Godin. Spot on observation from Seth, we realised that one of the main challenges for us with Litmus. Was the general apathy towards testing. Previous post: Twitter Weekly Updates for 2010-08-29. Lovely to meet you. Happily, I’ve just finished sorting and editing my photos from dConstruct 2010. 8211; the 35mm 1.8f lens. And the 55-200 VR. My absolute favourite was the photo of David Mccandless. During his “Information is beautiful” talk. The intricate logo looks like a halo around him. Davidsmalley’s dConstruct 2010. Goodbye my friend — hello beardy

http://davidsmalley.com/goodbye-my-friend

Lovely to meet you. Yesterday I said goodbye to a dear friend, a friend who had lived with us since he was a baby. He lived in our first ever house with us, since before I finished university, before we started Litmus, before we got engaged, before we were married and before the birth of our beautiful daughter. He spent nearly five years with us. Weeks before he arrived home, we had excitedly been out and bought him everything we thought he could need, a little plastic bed and soft lining was all he need...
