The area within the precinct walls of St Benet’s Abbey is home to a wealth of plant and animal life. Sitting on the side of the River Bure it is also one of six Norfolk Wildlife Trust Living Landscape. Areas which are home to key wildlife in the county. The Living Landscapes aim to provide a habitat which nurtures and allows these species to thrive, encouraging resident businesses, communities and visitors to play their part too. Butterfly can be found here in the summer.

Visitors to St Benet’s Abbey leave the bustle of everyday life behind. When possible, try to arrive as the monks, pilgrims and traders of old would have done, by boat or on foot. FREE Guided Tours take place from the beginning of May until the end of September each Wednesday at 2:00pm, and each Saturday and Sunday at 3:00pm. Meet your volunteer guide in front of the Gatehouse at the head of the path from the river. Suitable footwear and clothing. Something to drink and a snack. Or a nature audio tour.

St Benet's Abbey. He Abbey of St Benet at Holme. The buildings have been thoroughly demolished except for the gatehouse and the wind pump later built onto it. The surviving ruins and earthwork remains are very interesting indeed, however. Visitors can see how the site was laid out, while much important evidence remains below the ground. The Trust bought the main part of the site from the Crown Estate in 2002, and the gatehouse and mill from the Diocese of Norwich in 2004. An exciting two-year project too...
