steph in seoul: April 2008

http://steph-in-seoul.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 13, 2008. National museum of korea. Wednesday of this past week was a holiday for parliamentary elections. thus classes were cancelled and young and i took off for the public bath, lunch, and then the national museum of korea. for obvious reasons, cameras are not allowed in the public bath, so you'll have to be satisfied with these snaps from the museum. if you look closely you can see seoul tower in the background. A lovely pagoda tower stood on the first floor to welcome us. At the base o...

steph in seoul: March 2008

http://steph-in-seoul.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 17, 2008. Nam dae mun gate and market. This display is a small memorial to nam dae mun gate, formerly korea's oldest national treasure. four gates surround the city, and this south gate was the oldest, last rebuilt 600 years ago and one of the few historical structures to survive the devastation in the '50-'53 war. Koreans were understandably distraught, and when i arrived i found the walls of the gate's enclosure papered with memorial messages. long ago, one of the purposes of the city...

Saturday, May 17, 2008. In the middle of april, young had to leave for her own student-teaching for one month at a school outside of seoul. before she left, we all spent the day together at a park near the han river. This was the first bridge we crossed to get there. This was the second. All afternoon we kept wondering what that funny white thing was floating in the water. Eunbi posed for an impromptu photo shoot on the playground with justin. While this kid looked on in wonder. Well played, i thought fo...

steph in seoul: more gyeongju attractions

http://steph-in-seoul.blogspot.com/2008/05/more-gyeongju-attractions.html

Saturday, May 17, 2008. Right after leaving the museum, i crossed the street to see anapji pond, a walking park with several pavillions to admire. Here i found a scale model of a giant palace. Peeking through to the other side. The interior of this pavillion showed some weathering. Each pavillion was situated right on the water, creating a lovely scene. Anapji pond is home to many fish. I happened by a smaller one which was open for observation. These reminded me of maeve's cairn in ireland.

Not Constantinople.

I just spend two nights at the condo on Büyükada, so I'm feeling rather rejuvenated. I will spare the unhappy details of my parents visit (which I fear may be the only legacy retrievable in the future) and only say that the time I spent relaxing with them in their hotel room was one of the most comforting feelings I've had since arriving here. It left me soothed, yet eager to return to my home in America (for a brief stay, of course). 5 Finding the right words. 9 A truly restful sleep. 14 Really good tea.

Kenya Transformed.

Tuesday, July 12, 2011. Sunday was a day of choices at the Transformed International compound. The night before, Faith went to every member of the team and asked them if they would rather participate in the rich cultural heritage of Kitali's local church by attending the morning service, or stay home and get caught up on a few hours of sleep. Naturally, I chose the latter. In Kenya's rainy season, the stretch of time between 4pm and 8pm are considered prime storming hours. The rest of our time at the hou...

Wednesday, June 3, 2009. For the last couple months I have been volunteering at Hawaii's institute of Marine Biology. The Institute is located on a small island of the coast of Kanoehe . and you guessed it! It is the same island used for the picture of Giligan's Island. The show wasn't actually filmed there but it is the same island. Anyways, I was really lucky to get on board and it took me a few months to get on the crew. I'm not getting paid but it is a great experience! Wednesday, May 13, 2009. I can...
