Early in 1976 four young men from the Carolinas met in Nashville to try playing and singing their songs in a new format. They had been talking about it for a year or so and the time seemed right. Two of them, Tommy Goldsmith. Had come to town from Raleigh, NC in 71 as the Pritchard Avenue Band. Another group who arrived there at about the same time was Uncle Walt s Band. An acoustic trio from Spartanburg, SC who built their sound around the two guitars of DesChamps (Champ) Hood. Supported by David Ball.

Most of the writing is by Ben Runkle, a staunch Contenders fan who lives in Raleigh, NC where he makes his living repairing guitars. The art direction and construction are the work of Melinda Fine who, as Outta Nowhere. Provides custom design work for a wide range of clients. Many thanks to those who provided pictures and helped fill some gaps in the story.
