St. Louis Love

I'm from the Lou and I'm proud. Thursday, April 15, 2010. The story that I would like to talk about is that of The Luck of Roaring Camp. And 'Curse the luck! Thursday, April 8, 2010. St. Louis Love: Deeper Reading

http://www.stllove.blogspot.com/2010/04/deeper-reading.html

I'm from the Lou and I'm proud. Thursday, April 8, 2010. After reading these two stories, I realized that I needed to change my way of reading to focus more on points that seemed to stick out or hints that were clues to what it was already foreshadowing. For both of these stories, one could pick up on the hints but it takes practice of a deeper reading to truly understand the message the first time through. April 14, 2010 at 9:23 PM. St. Louis Love: It's a Boy's World

http://www.stllove.blogspot.com/2010/03/its-boys-world.html

I'm from the Lou and I'm proud. Wednesday, March 3, 2010. It's a Boy's World. We are able to notice very different views on boys in the 19th century compared to the stories about young girls. Boy's are more acceptable in the respect of growing up on the streets, working hard for their money and playing pranks or cracking jokes with people on the street. There is also a view different view on the relationship between young boys and their parents compared to the importance of parents for young girls.

St. Louis Love: What a Shocker!

http://www.stllove.blogspot.com/2010/03/what-shocker.html

I'm from the Lou and I'm proud. Wednesday, March 24, 2010. Whenever I read a story, knowing the author to me is key for how you perceive their message. If a story is written from a male's. Point of view, I will try to think how a man thinks or understand that this is a male. The same goes for a female author and her story she is writing. For example, if a male wrote a story about his parent's divorce it would sound completely different than from a female's. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

St. Louis Love: Whose Truly Mad?

http://www.stllove.blogspot.com/2010/02/whose-truly-mad.html

I'm from the Lou and I'm proud. Wednesday, February 24, 2010. I loved this story so much. It draws in it's readers and keeps them guessing till the very end. At points you don't know who to believe or what exactly is going on. When Sybil was put into an insane asylum, I started to wonder if she was really crazy or if Uncle should of been the one living in that room. There are so many questions as to how this mother and daughter duo relate to each other in the way of narrating their stories.

Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Gilman and Chopin

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/04/gilman-and-chopin.html

Monday, April 5, 2010. We've spent a lot of time this semester discussing authorship- what it means to be an author vs. a writer, how gender constructs our idea of an author, and how some authors become "major" while others remain "minor"- which has been both fruitful and engaging. But now I'd like to turn our discussion to an element of literature that doesn't receive a whole lot of attention: the reader. Look for more details? Or are your reading habits exactly the same? Welcome to our English 20503 cl...

Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Little Lord Fauntleroy

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/03/little-lord-fauntleroy.html

Tuesday, March 23, 2010. We had a great beginning discussion of Frances Hodgson Burnett's Little Lord Fauntleroy. In class today, and I'd like to continue it here on our blogs. I did a little definitive research, and it turns out that. Frances Hodgson Burnett is, indeed, a female author. I'm reading this text for the first time along with you, and as you know I had been under the impression she was a man! How does a text change when we find out that an author is male or female? And what if we can't tell?

Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Tom Sawyer

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/03/tom-sawyer.html

Tuesday, March 9, 2010. We had an excellent discussion today, and in light of that productive conversation, I'd like to invite you to continue it here. We addressed issues of boyhood, and city vs. country, and North vs. South. We also talked about national parenting, which can transcend just Twain's text to include others from this semester. Please select a passage from Tom Sawyer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Welcome to Major American Writers. Resources in American Literature.

Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Optional Extra Credit Blog

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/04/optional-extra-credit-blog.html

Monday, April 19, 2010. Optional Extra Credit Blog. In this final, optional, extra credit blog, please compare "Sissy" to one of our other primary text this semester. We discussed on Thursday how "Sissy" complicates our prescriptive thinking, so you may consider exploring this in your blog posting. But you are welcome to use any kind of compare/contrast construction you'd like. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Welcome to Major American Writers. Resources in American Literature. Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Nineteenth-Century Children's Periodicals

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/03/nineteenth-century-childrens.html

Wednesday, March 24, 2010. I mentioned in class that in addition to novels, there was a wealth of children's periodicals (think Highlights. And The Youth's Companion. These publications were wildly successful, and you'll find short stories from many of the authors we've encountered this semester. We'll do some work to find these next week when we meet with the Humanities librarian, but if you'd like to do some work now, these titles should aid your search. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
