June 21st, 2014. I was one of the rare holdouts in college who didn’t drink at all until he was 21. When I started to drink, I decided to go top-shelf right from the start. The way I saw it, why should I slog through swill? I didn’t want to drink to get drunk; I wanted to drink to enjoy the taste of the drink. I ran the numbers and found that if I drank only rarely, I could afford really good spirits. Thus, I had one of the fancier liquor collections in the fraternity house. Wee drams of all 23 options.

Archive for September, 2013. Are Yahoo Mail users better customers than Gmail users? September 28th, 2013. I admit it: I judge you by your email address. Whenever I see a Hotmail, AOL, or Yahoo address, I can’t help but think that somebody didn’t get the memo in the mid-aughts about moving to Gmail. But what if that bias is justified? What if I can tell how good a customer will be based on the customer’s email address? I run a µISV. In which I develop and sell blur reduction software. Yahoo Mail is rough...

MG in the mountains. MG in the mountains. June 21st, 2015. The little MG Midget was struggling. The altitude and the climb appeared to be wreaking havoc with the 1970-vintage British four-banger up front. She’d be fine for a while, then suddenly she’d seem to be on her last legs. Then, without warning, everything would be fine again. And so it went, all the way up 11,300 ft Berthoud Pass. Tyler’s 1970 MG Midget. Was it the cooling system? That was the leading hypothesis for a while. Despite a supplem...

Archive for November, 2014. Homeownership is the art of plumbing. November 13th, 2014. A new possibility sprung to mind. What if the pipe leading from the main to my meter had frozen? That would have been a real pain, as it ran underneath my concrete driveway. Back to the garage I went. With a flashlight, I began inspecting the hot water heater and its pipework. I followed the hot-water outflow pipe up from the water heater and… right past the fresh-air intake for the furnace. Stopping in Every State.

Archive for November, 2013. November 12th, 2013. A few weeks ago, I was at Luke’s house when his roommate mentioned a contest: be one of the first to visit all of the ski resorts covered by the Epic Pass this season, and win an Epic Pass for life. I was intrigued. And lost), so how much harder could the Epic Race. Epic Race: Ski 26 resorts first, get a ski pass for life. We fired up some web browsers to work out the logistics. The full Epic Pass. Further complicating the matter was that not all of the re...

Cars I have owned. June 28th, 2015. Just before the turn, I downshifted to 2nd, blipped the gas, and let the clutch out. The tires strained against the forces of the curve. I gradually opened the throttle. The flat-6 engine behind my head sang, its harmonic chorus growing more glorious with the increasing revs. And so it went. The miles descending from Nederland. My Porsche Boxster S. His was a “targa” model, meaning that it had a partially removable roof. It was the car I learned to driv...I was shootin...
