Stories from The Road. Playtesting notes from The Road card game. Design: Choices – Who to play? February 7, 2014. Also, they may be interesting variety in giving different characters specific starting equipment. The nurse has a first-aid kit. The ex-cop has a gun. The butcher has a cleaver (a lousy weapon but good for getting more food out of corpses). Perhaps I could create a surplus of these and allow the players to choose or distribute them randomly. Stories from The Road. Playtesting notes from The Road card game. September 18, 2014. The problem is that as things stand most betrayals are relatively dangerous. Sure, you can chicken out in combat, but the result is too extreme: even a single point of damage is a significant loss to the whole party, not to be considered lightly. Continue reading →. Stories from The Road. Playtesting notes from The Road card game. April 3, 2014. 8230;on the fourth day they approached an abandoned petrol station, hoping to scavenge something of value. The battles of the past two days had taken their toll; both Angela and Francis were showing their wounds. When a pair of undead horrors broke forth from the bathroom, Francis lost his nerve and cowered in the corner while the others attacked. He would not see the sunrise. They ate in silence and moved on down the road.

Stories from The Road. Playtesting notes from The Road card game. Theory: Discovery and Mastery. June 1, 2014. To me, game design is fundamentally about “procedural rhetoric” — the design of mechanical systems to create experiences. While games may well include more traditional forms of art — images, story, music — it is the interaction between the player and the systems of the game that sets games apart as a medium. This observation influences our design. Continue reading →. Theory: Discovery and Mastery.

Writing about games and stories. Stories from The Road. I’m designing a zombie-survival card game with the working title The Road. It’s a semi-cooperative game. Your chances of surviving alone are small but the zombies are not the only threat on the road. Food is short and your fellow travellers are eyeing you dangerously. The thing I like best about the game is the stories it generates. I’m playtesting at the moment and recording the stories on a new blog Stories from The Road. Or Y: The Last Man. Or...

Writing about games and stories. In this post I look at the design of combat against zombies. I’ll leave the issue of fighting other players to a later post. The zombie battle should contribute towards several parts of the target experience:. To force the players to coordinate against a common threat. To increase dissent between players over how to respond to the threat. To give a short-term a dramatic arc to the game as the tides of battle rise and fall. The key idea is to defer attacks that do not redu...

Writing about games and stories. Has agreed to do graphic design for the game. I am looking for an art style that is realistic, sombre and gritty. I am thinking of something similar to graphic novels The Walking Dead. And Y : The Last Man. I also want the setting to be distinctly Australian. I love the recent Wyrmwood. Short film by Sydney filmmakers Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner. This clip captures some of the feeling I want to get in my game:. On December 25, 2012 at 5:23 pm Leave a Comment. The expec...

Life on the Rim of the World. A blog about the adventures of Eric the Red. Thursday, March 1, 2012. Chapter 2 Easy Come Easy Go. 8221; The shop keeper smiled and said “What do you think this place is a museum? Of course you can buy supplies here.” As Erik purchased everything from lock picks to an upgraded tent he asked the store keeper “where he could buy a horse? As he climbed onto the horse he decided to go back to Riverwood and take the pass through the mountains. What am I suppose to do now, thought...
Stories From The Riverbank
Pay attention to the trees. I wanted somehow to start with a 'perfect’ piece - something beautiful, witty, profound or eye catching - but am left with the truth of sharing the fact that on the day I am posting for the first time on my birthday Blog site - that it is truly written from the riverbank! If anyone had told me the road that last year would have taken me down - I probably would have declined the trip - but the journey has led me here….to a beautiful place to begin. Thank you for stopping by!

Seven Minuts to midnight...
Seven Minuts to midnight. All the stories begin the same but is only up to us how to end them.
