Every one of Toussaint's pans are individual works of art, all slightly different, all hand made from scratch. All of the pans start off as either 45 gallon or oversize oil-drums. Toussaint then uses a large hammer to drop the flat end of the drum into a deep dish shape. Templates are then used to mark out the different notes, the shapes and sizes being critical to obtain a perfect note. Carlo Norville sinking a galvanised bass. Finally after cleaning the drums are sent away to be chromed in a chrome bath.

Tuning is a skill which can only be gained with years of practice. It involves beating the untuned notes with a rounded hammer until the desired pitch and quality of note is reached. Often one 'difficult' note will take hours to get just right. Once tuned, the note will be clean and pure. During a pan's life-time it undergoes a lot of stress from playing and like most instrument will require occasional fine tuning. On the steel pan this process is known as blending. Toussaint Clarke first played pan in 1968. He began tuning pans only a year later when he was 12 years old. His teachers were Theo Stevens from Trinidad and Halem Ifill. As well as making and tuning their pans Toussaint is a key member of Rainbow Steel Orchestra. Toussaint also paricipates in the London Notting Hill Carnival each summer where for the last few summers he has played in the London All-Stars along with his children Leroy, Sebastian and Rebecca. The students will work primarily as a group and Toussaint works hard to develop team spirit, providing encouragement, motivation and a wealth of knowledge to draw upon. Toussaint will build close working relationships with the students and the staff. Toussaint teaching one of his bands (Real Steel). While on tour in Barbados.
