脳卒中の初期治療をstroke unit SU で行えば、その後のADL、QOLは改善し、脳卒中死亡率も低下し、結果的に自宅復帰率の上昇、入院期間の短縮効果も得られる事実が1990年以降欧州を中心に報告され、メタ解析でもSUの有用性は確認されました。 最近公表された、わが国の 脳卒中治療ガイドライン2004 でも、SUでの脳卒中治療をグレードA 行うよう強く求められる に位置づけていますが [6]. 一方すでにわが国でも各地に Stroke UnitあるいはStroke Care Unit をうたう施設が増加しつつありますが、SU、SCUの定義は曖昧で、その普及率は脳卒中診療施設の3 以下と少なく [7,8].
