Blogging Through Elementary Mathematics. Volume with Water Displacement. Learning to calculate volume can be fun if done so correctly. I remember just memorizing formulas of volume in my pre-calc class, but when I was in my physics class, we actually did hands-on activities of finding volume. The activity with water displacement was the best one! Such a fun activity! This volume activity works wonders when finding volume of irregular shaped objects! Blogging Through Elementary Mathematics. Here are a few activities that I found to teach addition and subtraction. Hopefully this will help later on when teaching. Make pins from 2 liter soda bottles. Students take turns bowling and writing the subtraction equation. 9 pins, 4 hit: 9 – 4 = 5. Give each bowler 2 turns. When learning chapter 5.3, I really thought that using illustrations of the fractions with the bars to add them really helped. When they were drawn on the board it seemed easier to find the common denominator. With fractions, the problems I run into are finding the denominator and then trying to get the numbers multiplied to equal that denominator, so it’s really easy to get confused and come up with the wrong answer.
