A mild winter is always welcome. It’s even better when followed by a truly warm early spring! Last week temperatures were in the high 70s, and things started to stir in the garden. These mini daffodils are always the first to push through, as if testing the situation and then, once satisfied, standing guard for the next to emerge. Rich spent time playing around this afternoon with some different angles and filters, and I love what he came up with! The donors’ names are included in the full name of ...

Hawaii Trip - Jan 2008. We spent the month visiting six of the eight Hawaiian Islands. Note that the eight stripes in the Hawaiian flag correspond to the eight islands:. Since 2007 was void of island travel, we needed a tropical island fix, and, having never been to our 50th state, we decided to visit one of Karen's St. Olaf college friends, Jory Watland, who has lived in Hawaii for 40 years. As an ordained Lutheran minister, he made a particularly interesting guide. Trip Log and Photos. While reading a ...

Building Order: Using Free Tools to Build a Simple App and Streamline Workflows. This wasn’t a project that was assigned, or one that grew out of any particularly pressing need. Instead, the idea was formed, and the application was built, over time by experimentation and the serendipitous coalescing of several different needs, wants and observations. In short, there was no efficient workflow for updating these pages, so they sat until updating them became “an emergency.”. And how could we turn them into ...

St Patrick’s Day Cactus? No, this is not the red-headed Irishman again. It’s our Thanksgiving cactus (. Blooming again in March. I have to wonder whether the cactus was grown in lower temperatures in the nursery (and grocery store who knows how long it was there before we bought it) and then warmer temperatures in our sunroom before its second blooming. And as a bonus, just this morning we spotted the emergence of a bud on our large Gymnocalycium. BudWatch 2015 has begun! Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Postcard History: Baoba Swinging Bridge and Shimer’s Rock Cut. Postcards are curated vignettes of our past, often idealized views of places from a time when it appears people could wander more freely. But if you keep your eyes open and do some research, you’ll find that many of these places are still yours to explore. Both Google Maps and MyTopo.com know Baoba, however. The topo map clearly shows the rock cut, labeled Shimers Rock Cut. The benchmark description refers to the ERIE RAILROAD WAITING SHED.
