J and I have spent the spring and early summer following the exploits of an amazing hiker that goes by the name of Achilles. He started on February 27 and in just about 4 months he’s blown thru 13 states (including a monster 40 mile day to breeze thru Maryland) and crossed over into Maine on June 1. Things started to go down-hill (well, and then up, and then down again) from there. Within 3 days he was off the trail with knee problems. On Sunday he got back to the trail and popped off a nifty 17 mile day.

On October 26, Mount Merapi in Indonesia erupted again. One of the first fatalities reported from the blast was a man known as Mbah Maridajan, who held the job title of Spiritual Guardian of the Volcano. My first thought (characteristically inappropriate) was “there’s a job opening that I’m interested in”. I wonder if there is a spiritual guardian for Fujihama, or Katadin, or my local “mountain”, Point Mountain. Maybe that’s the opportunity for me. And the extra buck could get me most of a cup of coffee.

Today is National Trail Days and I’m thinking about a lot of things from our May walk at Mt Greylock to our plans for the 30 year anniversary of our summit of Mt Mahooney. I’m also thinking about John Wooden, sportsmanship and the definition of success. Earlier this week Jim Joyce blew a call at first base that cost Armando Galaraga a perfect game. The reaction of those individuals and virtually all others around the scene has been, in Joyce’s words, “phenomenal”. It made me proud to be a baseball fan.

It’s all fun and games and victory beers until you discover that the jetboil won’t hold a flame when it’s 25 degrees out. Just after I took this video I discovered that. No boiled water. No hot meal. No hot cup of tea. And certainly no victory beer. Just another lesson learned on my way to Katahdin.
