Three Lakes Farm: Another Loss in the Corral
http://threelakesfarm.blogspot.com/2013/01/another-loss-in-corral.html
Seeking Self-reliance on 5 Acres. Sunday, January 6, 2013. Another Loss in the Corral. While feeding the chickens this morning, I found a dead hen. Since the body was complete, I doubt it was killed by a predator. This is the second hen to dies this winter. Those hens are 3 years old, so this may not be too surprising. Posted by Andre Lochin. Seeking Self-reliance on 5 Acres. Thursday, February 14, 2013. The light spectrum of the grow light is therefore important. I made some research on the lights I bough. There isn't enough energy in the short wavelengths. The grow light setup currently has 2 tubes, and will soon have 6 tubes in a 3x2 setup, with 2-3 inches separation between each fixture. That gap is enough to fit a line of blue LEDs in between and gives a useful boost. Here are the full specifications on the Ecolux lights used in my setup:.

Three Lakes Farm: Update on compost system
http://threelakesfarm.blogspot.com/2013/06/update-on-compost-system.html
Seeking Self-reliance on 5 Acres. Sunday, June 9, 2013. Update on compost system. A new compost pile was started 3 weeks ago with donkey and goat bedding. Some dry bedding was added on top a week ago. Today, I measured the temperature inside the pile: 100F. Not bad. This means the forced air system appears to be working. Posted by Andre Lochin. We had several frosty mornings in the past few days. If the diverters are allowed to freeze, they will bust, so rain water collection is stopped at this time. Posted by Andre Lochin. Seeking Self-reliance on 5 Acres. Saturday, June 30, 2012. The donkeys are back to our farm, 7 jennies and 2 foals. Three of the jennies were already here last year, and they did recognize our place. Here are the donkeys entering the pasture. They will share the pasture with our goats, who can't keep up with the grass. I am sure the goats will appreciate the help, although they seem to have mixed feelings on this picture. In the picture below, a jennie that was here last year, with her baby.
