The state of the union food-wise is not good, says our favorite New York Times food columnist Mark Bittman. No kidding. That’s why it’s long past time for a National Food Policy. Come to think of it, Bittman says, many of our domestic challenges are connected one way or the other with food. Here are Bittman’s top policy recommendations:. We li...

Local Ecology: What goes down the drain gets turned out to pasture via toxic sludge
http://localecology.blogspot.com/2008/02/what-goes-down-drain-gets-turned-out-to.html
Spaces and connections, natural and human-made. Sunday, February 03, 2008. What goes down the drain gets turned out to pasture via toxic sludge. What goes down the drain - detergents, personal-care products and discarded and excreted medications - may be out of sight and out of mind, but they are not, unfortunately, out of this world. So sludge and sludge-rich composts, often containing toxic chemicals, are commonly applied to farmland, parks, forests and yards. Given the volume that is consumed, a lot s...

saxapahaw general store: January 2010
http://saxapahawgeneralstore.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, January 9, 2010. Friday, January 8, 2010. Halfway up the road, at Stuydivant's Auto on NC-54, I noticed a marquis that read "collards." I pulled onto the gravel drive, hoping to find someone to make good on that promise. Round back of the barns there to the side of the auto shop, just next to a couple of nice fields, I imposed upon three gentlemen chopping firewood to find out where the collards were. saxapahaw general store: October 2009
http://saxapahawgeneralstore.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, October 17, 2009. And the village was quiet. Saxapahaw has developed a certain kind of double life since the summer farmers' market began here five years ago. In the summer, it becomes the quirky destination for folks from the hinterlands, who descend upon the village once per week from the distant burgs of Chapel Hill and Burlington to enjoy local music and local food before returning home and spelling the name of the town to their friends who've never heard of it before. Why have we come toge...

saxapahaw general store: May 2009
http://saxapahawgeneralstore.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, May 31, 2009. Because we have already asked much of the space in our little store, the products on the shelves have gotten pretty comfortable having unlikely neighbors. They protested for a while, but then I think they realized they had more in common than they originally thought, given the proper context. Take, for instance, our fishing worms, which are now nestled cozily next to the wine tools and the picnic baskets. Sunday, May 10, 2009. Local economy as investment. And what are the roles of t...

Local Ecology: I Failed the Challenge, or What I Learned From the Eat Local Challenge

Spaces and connections, natural and human-made. Sunday, July 13, 2008. I Failed the Challenge, or What I Learned From the Eat Local Challenge. Eating a 100% local diet is just not easy. I tried, but I failed. And I failed for 3 basic reasons. For my lunches I will allow myself to eat sandwiches again. However, I will start making my own peanut butter as soon as I decide which food processor to buy and I will continue buying locally produced cheeses even though they do cost more. Because I love it!

Spaces and connections, natural and human-made. Tuesday, January 01, 2008. RIP: Squeeze the Pulp. Today, a new STP has been unveiled in the form of a wiki rather than a discussion forum. sustainable grub | what it takes to make real food possible
Our local real-food revolution. The only crop that was ready to be harvested this week in my early spring garden was one I had nothing to do with. When I went out to the garden to check on my sugar-snap peas (they finally germinated! Imagine my delight when I also discovered a whole bed of chickweed and dead nettle. These delicious and nutritious wild, edible, perennial and ubiquitous greens had taken over a bed of soil that I had not yet planted. What could be better? I made my first batch of the season...
