wine-life news review: The consumer must not become a wine critic
http://www.wine-life.co.uk/blogs/wine-news/2010/02/consumer-must-not-become-wine-critic.html
Oliver Styles gives his view of what's going on in wine today. Thursday, 11 February 2010. The consumer must not become a wine critic. The title pretty much explains where I'm going. It follows Beverley Blanning MW's reappraisal of Tim Hanni MW's comments on her blog. Now I will make a concrete case against the consumers becoming their own critics. Put simply, if we let the consumer decide what's what, the already fragile bottom of the Fino Sherry market will drop out comprehensively. Seriously, find...

Double Decanted: January 2012

Does every wine really tell a story? Sunday, January 29, 2012. Villa Antinori IGT Toscana 2007. Sunday dinner service is a sharp rebuttal to whatever was said in church that morning about faith increasing as circumstances turn us more wretched. Do you remember what a pacifier tastes like? First seating is at 5:30. She asks for a Campari and soda and he says he wants a Gibson, attempting a tone of voice that dares Rafael to tell him we don't have cocktail onions. Good going, old man. And like that the own...

Double Decanted: May 2012

Does every wine really tell a story? Wednesday, May 30, 2012. The Winemaker, Part I. Not all the must had spilled, there were still- what, fifty? Gallons of liquid left in the tank. Fifty of 2,018, resting swamp-like around some stray piles of soggy, pale Cabernet Sauvignon skins at 1.5 brix. The rest was on the floor and in the drain. He glared at the tank, the oversized, overcomplicated auto-rotating fermenter that was completely wrong for this winery. The owner had bought it back in February when ...

Does every wine really tell a story? Friday, February 1, 2013. The only time "cloudiness" was a positive quality in a glass of red wine. I have a new review up on www.americanwineryguide.com with a couple of on-site photos of the beautiful Duckhorn Vineyards. Please check it out here. And come back next week for part two of the story in the previous post. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. A Good Beer Blog. The Reverse Wine Snob. HoseMaster of Wine™. Does every wine really tell a story? Wednesday, December 21, 2011. Alcohol, Part 5: 21. Nxg7 Kd8, 22. Qf6! Nxf6, 23. Be7# 1-0. The doors slide shut. You reach for the "Roof" button but the other passenger has already hit it. You caught a glimpse of Him when you got on and had a really crazy thought, but now He's standing a step behind you and you can't be sure. Your eardrums squirm as the ground floor fades. He shuffles His feet and the thought you had before is back. Could it be? God, I love wine. A...

Double Decanted: Missing South Africa
http://doubledecanted.blogspot.com/2014/01/missing-south-africa.html
Does every wine really tell a story? Wednesday, January 15, 2014. I took this photo in Stellenbosch (almost in Paarl) in February 2011. The mountain is Klapmutskop. We made really good Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Chenin Blanc, and other wines that season. I was so nervous about going to South Africa. It sounded like a scary, dangerous place based on the sensationalist, out-of-context news stories I sought out and obsessed over in the two months prior to leaving. Does every wine really tell a story? Thursday, January 17, 2013. Folie a Deux Menage a Trois Red 2010, Part I. Since there were no more grapes hanging in the vineyards, you could say that harvest was over. But harvest wasn't over. We were all still working twelve hour days, and would continue to until Christmas. There were thirty-nine tanks in various stages of fermentation, and it was our job to get the wine in bottles and on shelves by this time next year. The bottom line was that they were the only co...

Does every wine really tell a story? Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Alcohol, Part 3B: GABA GABA Hey! People who say they sleep well or- get this- better. After getting loaded are just messing with me, right? They're savoring that moment when my brow furrows and I'm actually considering that something so batshit absurd might be true. Drinking from a Dixie cup is every kind of inadequate in these situations, so I duck beneath the tap and slurp in all I can. The head rush as I come up is staggering. F...Then ...

Does every wine really tell a story? Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Here's a sorting table during a vintage I worked a few years ago. Somehow the tension in the air during crushing does not come through in this video I shot. Will the must hopper overflow? Am I forgetting to make an enzyme addition? Is there too much botrytis on the berries? No, none of these things are happening, except in my head. And yet I am crouching under the grape conveyor with my little camera. Watching this now is very calming to me&...
