From the daily life of a specifier. Furnish, install, or provide? Most architects, I believe, define the terms furnish. And sometimes those definitions appear in an owners general conditions. When defined, they are part of the contract documents, and requirements using them are enforceable based on those definitions. In practice, perhaps because the definitions are nearly ubiquitous, I have had few problems with interpretation by contractors, or with enforcement. Oddly, its architects. Links to this post.

Specific thoughts...: Rules of thumb

From the daily life of a specifier. Drafter at work; Wikimedia. A huge problem that continues to grow is that we have too much information. When American architects formed AIA, 150 years ago, construction was much simpler; mechanical systems hadn't changed much since the Romans used them 2,000 years ago. Since then, countless new materials and processes have been introduced. If it comes in a box, don’t waste time detailing it. Do. What is needed; but. Where does the information go? General drawing notes ...

From the daily life of a specifier. Many of todays CSI members missed the good old days. The education sessions and exhibit hall are much the same, but there were a lot more extracurricular activities many years ago. Im going to reminisce about a couple of my early conventions, starting with Chicago. The year was 1990. The Institute president was S. Steve Blumenthal. The president of the host chapter was Gary Betts, who later went on to be president of the Institute. Links to this post.
