Hook of the river. June 4, 2013. That’s my poster. That’s my Georgia O’Keefe poster. He didn’t know what she meant until he saw it sitting there, the bright orange-red petals pluming from the stalk, sitting next to a saggy cardboard box filled with rubbish. Walking backwards he pulled the cart through the motion-activated sliding doors, the mass of goods remaining steady, and nearly made it into the elevator when the last wheel caught on the threshold and sent a jolt through the cart. Most of his war...

Hopscotch | Kerala to Colorado

Hook of the river. June 21, 2012. One cannot speak of Julio Cortazar’s Hopscotch without mentioning the ‘Table of Instructions’ that prefaces the novel. The unique structure is somewhat difficult to explain and so I’ll let Cortazar do the work. The following is lifted directly from his forward:. In its own way, this book consists of many books, but two books above all. The End. Consequently, the reader may ignore what follows with a clean conscience. Place before he gave the signal to start flapping thei...

The Fire Alphabet | Kerala to Colorado

Hook of the river. July 6, 2012. Or vice versa; does the reader’s opinion of the book affect the way he consumes it? Some author’s don’t give you a choice,. Can take an entire summer. To complete. But even shorter works such as The Old Man and the Sea or The Great Gatsby, which can easily be read in an afternoon, may be more enjoyable when each line of prose is savored and cherished. It’s entirely up to the reader’s whimsy. Next post →. Two very different people who have bonded over good stories.

Pedro Paramo | Kerala to Colorado

Hook of the river. June 29, 2012. The fun part was seeing magical mechanisms used by Rulfo that were repeated in Marquez’s work: church bells that tolled for three days straight and could be heard in every town in the region, two characters mistakenly buried in the same grave whispering to each other inside their coffin, undying devotion towards a troubled woman, etc. I noticed the same similarities with Don DeLillo and David Foster Wallace. Hook of the river. Hook of the river. Their rafts were lumbering down Westwater Canyon on the Colorado when the satellite phone rang. A once familiar noise was now an intrusion. The trip leader, Brin, answered. Brin announced. An old timer named Walter ignored the food. He kept pestering the guides. What did the voice on the phone say? Let’s pretend that phone call never happened. And it changed you. It changed the other guide too. That was nervousness over the rapids. Tomorrow will be worse. The river c...

Underworld | Kerala to Colorado
https://keralatocolorado.wordpress.com/2012/04/12/underworld
Hook of the river. April 12, 2012. The first thing people want to talk about when you mention Underworld is the size of it. The book is long – 827 pages of dense paragraphs, complex sentences and no readily discernible plot to keep readers turning the page. You should get a prize when you finish. That’s my biggest complaint about long books, it dissuades so many readers before they even read the inside cover. Yet when I finished I immediately said, “I want to read this book again.”.
