Chicken project

Sustainability is key to our long term success. In November 2009, we started a chicken project with 50 layer hens. We sell our eggs to one of the main hotels in Arusha, and also through several shops. Demand for our eggs has always exceeded our supply! We have gradually grown this project to the point where we now have capacity for 350 chickens! Just as we care for our children and staff’s well being, we care for our chickens - they are healthy and happy, and prove it by laying eggs prolifically!

Sponsoring education gives a child skills for life! Contrary to popular belief, there is NO free education in Tanzania even at primary level. For example, it costs on average 10 per month per child to send one of our children to government primary school. We have to pay for at least the following:. School Shoes 22.50. Cash to the school to pay for the school cook 4. School watchman contribution 1. Other ad-hoc fees (eg national exams in year 4 and 7; passport photos for school administration) 20- 40.

We are always looking forward! Now resident in our own compound, we have plenty of building projects and ideas for future expansion! In the short term we have some very tangible, and pressing, goals:. To replace our exhausted Toyota Hilux - 8,000. In the longer term:. Buy an additional half to one acre plot of land. Adjoining our current plot (when that land becomes available) - 7,000. After buying additional land, build single-room housing for our older teenagers. Every makes a difference.

As well as the costs involved in feeding and clothing our children, we have additional regular costs such as:. For our Tanzanian staff.
