Sunny Side of the Hill: Cleary and Kimmel and me—Whoopee!
http://sybillacook.blogspot.com/2014/07/cleary-and-kimmel-and-mewhoopee.html
Sunny Side of the Hill. July 10, 2014. Cleary and Kimmel and me—Whoopee! An author I knew when I lived in Roseburg, wrote A Place of Her Own. A neat historical story about an ancestor who bought her OWN farm (imagine that! In Oregon back in the 1800s, even though a mere woman. Another excellent example of the overlooked stories of pioneer women who came out on the Oregon Trail—not always willingly! Coincidentally, we have the same publisher: Globe Pequot of Connecticut. Who would have imagined that?

Is Homemade Jam a Bargain? | getyourpitchforkon
https://getyourpitchforkon.wordpress.com/2013/06/23/is-homemade-jam-a-bargain
The official blog of the book Get Your Pitchfork On! By Get Your Pitchfork On! Is Homemade Jam a Bargain? There is no doubt that organic homemade jam can be exponentially better than store-bought jam. But is it cheaper to make? I decided to do the math. Is valued in today’s economy! Anyway, the flat of organic berries (approximately 12 pounds) cost $27 from my friend Nellie, who sourced them from a farm that pays its workers a fair wage yada yada. Thanks, Garcia Farm! I went to one of Portland’s dozens o...

Sunny Side of the Hill: February 2013
http://sybillacook.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Sunny Side of the Hill. February 24, 2013. CLEANING UP THE CULCH AND REDDING UP YOUR ROOM. This month’s word find was in an article in the Oregonian. Another old phrase I heard people use when I lived in the East is “redding up a room.” I suspect the root is getting a room ready for company, probably by knolling the pillows and books and dumping the culch where it won’t be seen. If we have all these neat words for housekeeping, why don’t we have enough neat words for the company that we keep? The step re...

Just another 20-something with bangs living in Detroit. March 3, 2014. It’s been a quiet month in Detroit. Where it hasn’t been above freezing in over a month (minus that one day we got to 36 degrees, but it felt like 80), seemingly a weekend cannot pass without fresh snow, and I have not bothered to bike to work or clean the salt stains out of my shoes. What’s the point? Or a fantasy I conjured during yet another polar-vortex walk? Was there once a time I welcomed the snow? But its been a long winter, w...

Just another 20-something with bangs living in Detroit. March 30, 2014. In an effort to do something besides work, be chilly, watch Twin Peaks (go Netflix it right now) and eat my my boyfriend Ben’s spatchocked chicken, I’ve forced myself into new ventures. The first is a proposal for Midtown Inc.’s (the quazi-private non-profit that runs my neighborhood,. What do you do with the ruins of ideas? What do you do with the trashed, physical remnants that “progress” leaves us? One thought on “ 3/30. You are c...

Just another 20-something with bangs living in Detroit. August 11, 2014. Here is a Home. I had a lot of ideas of what sort of place Detroit was. These ideas were mostly academic; I understood Detroit’s problems from books and articles I read, I felt privilege as a status of economics, not race. I was idealistic about Detroit’s future growth and sustainability: We can do it! Surprising to learn, that people who look different from me, believe differently from me, who speak differently than me, who live in...

Just another 20-something with bangs living in Detroit. May 28, 2014. I’m currently sitting in my apartment, where it is warm, humid and half-way packed up. It’s been exactly a year (plus a few days) since I moved in, and the weather is remarkably the same. I guess living in the midwest has turned me into some sort of weather obsessive, but after this winter, all I want to do is comment on how warm and pleasant it suddenly is. How could that not drive me to tears? Argues that community, belonging, and ch...

Sunny Side of the Hill: January 2013
http://sybillacook.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Sunny Side of the Hill. January 24, 2013. Hi all—and a happy New Year from my Portland home. Most of last year was devoted to finishing up the revision of Walking Portland. No one can accuse this city of stagnation! And, I must admit, it has been good for me to change my ruts. Sybilla A. Cook. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Subscribe to Sunny Side of the Hill by Email.
