本鄉在漢墾移民尚未至此開拓前，在當時是個未知地名的蠻荒叢林，只有當時活躍在此區的大肚平埔族據用著對岸之地。鄭成功治台初期，沒有太多漢人前往南投一帶開墾，並經常有「番人」出草掠奪，影響移墾。當時鄭成功的左武衛劉國軒，率兵攻打「大肚番」，沿著烏溪往深山驅逐，一直打到國姓一帶才停止，並就地紮營墾荒，而將駐營之地，稱之為「國姓埔」，這應該是「國姓」地名的由來。訂閱：文章 (Atom).
