Tall Pines Hiker

Saturday, July 25, 2015. Cube Iron Mountain and Four Lakes. On Saturday, July 25. Patti and I hiked around the Four Lakes area in the Cabinet Mountains and then to the top of Cube Iron Mountain. The 8-mile Four Lakes Loop is an excellent introduction to the Cabinet Lakes country. Add about a half mile round trip to climb to the top of Cube Iron Mountain for a total of 8.5 miles. Hike up Trail 460 1/4 mile to Squaw Pass. At a junction, go right onto Trail 1512 for about 30 yards, where an unmaintained...

http://www.tallpineshiker.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Saturday, August 27, 2011. On Saturday, August 27, Patti, Gene, Mary, Lynda and I went to Glacier Park and hiked up to the top of Angel Wing. 727 miles one way. Angel Wing is the mountain in the foreground just right of center. Mount Gould is the high mountain behind Angel Wing. Our destination is the top of Angel Wing. The water on the left is Lake Josephine. Lake Josephine. A boat dock is located at the light white area across the lake to the left of center. Is hidden behind the right side of Angel Wing.

Tall Pines Hiker: August 2014

http://www.tallpineshiker.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 29, 2014. Rumble Creek Lakes, Holland Peak attempt. Friday August 29 I did a strenuous hike to Lower and Upper Rumble Creek Lake and attempted to climb to the top of Holland Peak. I hiked with Jim, his son Bob, Dick (75 years old! Jim forgot to turn off his GPS app when we got back to the trailhead so I am estimating our total mileage at 8.5 miles and the elevation gain at 4500 ft. The kiosk hadn't finished brewing that day's coffees so we had to wait a little bit. In the photo below is a ...

Tall Pines Hiker: March 2012

http://www.tallpineshiker.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, March 10, 2012. When I was at the Women's Expo at Ronan, Montana this was the view outside the community center. It is the Mission Mountains. Pretty, isn't it? Views at 1 pm and 5 pm. The mountain on the far right side - under the cloud - is Mt Calowahcan. I would give you the names of the other mountains, but I can't find their names. This is really strange because they are so prominent and I'd be surprised if they are not named. These mountains are in the Mission Mountain Tribal. Burnt trees ...

Tall Pines Hiker: September 2011

Friday, September 9, 2011. Geiger Lakes and Lost Buck Pass. The metal and wooden signs indicating the trail seem redundant, but as the metal sign seems to often be mistaken for a deer, the small wooden signs may be necessary. Start: Trail head Trail End: Lost Buck Pass, junction with Cabinet Divide Trail 360. Elevation: 3,666 feet Elevation: 6,000 feet. This trail (# 656) takes you past Lower and Upper Geiger Lakes. Lower Geiger Lake is reached at about 2 miles. A number of social use trails lead from tr...

Tall Pines Hiker: December 2013

http://www.tallpineshiker.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 10, 2013. Joyce, a hiking friend, had a writeup in the local newspaper today. This year she took up backpacking and camping in order to reach parts of the Park that can't be done on a day hike unless you can hike 20 plus miles in a day. Her last hike, a three-day adventure from Logan Pass to Goat Haunt and into Waterton, started cold and wet before a bit of divine intervention. Husband Edley doesn’t go on hikes with Moon, 78, and instead stays at the couple’s small cattle ra...While she...

Life among the Tall Pines: Cattle menage a trois

http://tallpinesranch.blogspot.com/2015/08/cattle-menage-trois.html

Tuesday, August 04, 2015. Cattle menage a trois. I did see it was heifer #110 who was coming into heat. Either she is not yet into standing heat else Buddy is too big for her as she wouldn't stay still when Buddy tried to mount her. In between attempts Buddy would lick her, else she would lick Buddy's forehead. Action going on right now. My herd is something else: racists, lesbians, and now swingers. Buddy is as big as both the heifers put together. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Reins, not stirrup.

Life among the Tall Pines: February 2015

http://tallpinesranch.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 28, 2015. Today my Uncle Curt and Aunt Cathy had a celebration honoring their 50th wedding anniversary. Because of the cattle I couldn't take time away to travel to Washington State for their celebration. Happy 50th Curt and Cathy! Also this weekend my neighbor Jan is in Vancouver, Washington moving her daughter back to Kalispell. She would have liked me to help them move, and to drive the moving truck back to Kalispell. But again, I can't because of the cattle. Later, when I returned ...

Life among the Tall Pines: Willow tree fall

http://tallpinesranch.blogspot.com/2015/08/willow-tree-fall.html

Sunday, August 09, 2015. Late Sunday afternoon we had strong winds for a brief time. I had just finished spraying weeds in the south pasture. I felt only a few wind driven raindrops. I saw lots of dirt blown from the ridge and heading east. Other than that I have seen stronger winds. The winds were over by the time I got back to the house. It is a good thing I had redone the electric lines to run underground as the tree also had held up the electric wire that powered the garage, tool shed and barn.

Life among the Tall Pines: March 2015

http://tallpinesranch.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 30, 2015. As I burn the ditches every year the fuel load is not heavy. A long way to go. Below is the only time the fire jumped the barrier. Having burnt the south ditch I decided to try burning the north ditch. This is trickier to burn as neighbor's place (and their tall grass) is closer and downwind from the fire. And the pine trees near here drop needles and pine cones adding to the fuel load. But I safely burned this ditch as I again raked a line and burnt a barrier. Five big hay bales.

Life among the Tall Pines: Hay, hiking, balloon

http://tallpinesranch.blogspot.com/2015/08/hay-hiking-balloon.html

Monday, August 03, 2015. Hay, hiking, balloon. Friday I got some more hay. Donna's mother's place had eight acres of grass that had not been mowed for some years. It also had weeds - some parts more than others. I paid Wyatt to swath the field for me on Tuesday evening. Donna has a baler and she baled the hay on Friday. Initially the plan was to hitch the bale wagon to the baler, and standing on the bale wagon, I would pull and stack the bales as they came out of the baler. Waiting for another bale.

Life among the Tall Pines: May 2015

http://tallpinesranch.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 28, 2015. I decided to sell two of my steers now instead of waiting until Fall. I would have liked to have kept them till Fall but I don't trust I will have enough grass. The other steer still has his one horn so I am keeping him until that horn falls off. The long hair must be from Buddy's tail. Since Evan was hauling Dan's cattle to the auction on Wednesday, along with another person's bull, I shipped my two steers with Evan. We were done herding by 9:30 am. That was fast. With Donna givi...

Life among the Tall Pines: August 2015

http://tallpinesranch.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 30, 2015. I bought a used tractor last week. No more pulling hay bales on pallets! The tractor is a John Deere 5420. Early morning this past Saturday I drove it home. The top speed is about 17 to 18 mph. I've been so busy with the irrigation pipes I haven't had a chance to do anything else with the tractor. For more info on John Deere 5420 tractors: http:/ www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/001/5/7/1571-john-deere-5420.html. Friday, August 28, 2015. Cattle, less cattle and gophers. The prev...

Life among the Tall Pines: September 2014

http://tallpinesranch.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 26, 2014. The cattle (especially Momma) love watermelon and apples. Well, not all cattle care for the watermelon rind but it seems as if most of the cattle love the apples. And some - like Beulah - really. Love apples. She is getting more and more caught up in eating apples and is pushing by the bull more rudely now to get to more apples. The bull doesn't mind as long as he has some apples to eat. I cut the rind up for the cattle. Happy cattle chewing their cud and enjoying the sun.

Life among the Tall Pines: August 2014

Sunday, August 31, 2014. The last cow to arrive (the one with the split hooves and limp - which is almost gone) is just now going into heat, or is cycling again as she may not have gotten pregnant if she cycled once since arriving here. Buddy the Bull is keeping constant attention on her and is always by her side. From the previous photos. you may say. the cattle got it wrong. Shouldn't the bull be mounting the cow? When the cow first comes into heat she often does what is called " bulling. Tuesday eveni...
