老子道徳経の言葉なので、ここでは 道 を語ったものとして解釈しているでござるが、実は 道 なんて文字は一度も出てこないので、今回の章がまるまる儒家の書物に出てきても違和感があまり無い様に思えるでござる。 そして現存する最古の老子のテキストである 郭店老子(1993年出土、前316 前250年前後のものと推測される) は、今本と比べて儒家批判色がそれほど強くなく、実は現在知られる老子の儒家批判色の方こそが後世書き加えられたものである可能性があるのでござる。 目や耳でとらえられぬ物を見るのを 明らかな智 といい、弱々しい立場を保つ事を 真の強さ という。 英語でも自然の事を擬人化して “Mother Nature / 母なる自然” と呼んだりするのと似ているでござる。 これら 道 の働きは 玄徳 すなわち自然に備わった不可思議な能力なのだ。 この世の全てがありのままの力を発揮する事でこの世は成り立っているという事でござるが、その ありのまま こそが徳であり、その根源が 道 であるという事でござるな。 道 はそれらを あるがままにさせておくという無為の徳、つまり玄徳 によって見守っているという訳でござる。

I suspect that these scholars know there are jobs in the government but don’t know jobs in private sector and know how to succeed in the government but don’t know the way to stay in private sector. In other words, they cannot avoid bad practices of scholars of Chinese studies as if they wore Western clothes on Chinese body. 今回の文を持って福沢が知識よりも実践に重きを置いていると断ずる事はできないでござるが、ここで漢学の一派である陽明学の 知行合一 (ちこうごういつ) っぽい論調となっている所が少々面白いでござるな。
