Hills Peak is a very rocky prominence at the eastern end of the Calapooya Mountains near the transition to the High Cascades. There are no trails in the area, but within a mile of the peak, there are a number of easily accessible wetlands, including several small lakes with associated bogs, and there are also good plants along the roadside. This wonderful trail alternates between forest and dry rocky areas before opening up to a grand sloping meadow that at various times of year is filled with balsamroot, buckwheat, and lupines. At the top of the meadow sits an abandoned lookout. The terrific view takes in the Crater Lake Rim and Mt. McLoughlin and much of the rest of the southern Cascades. Based on 6 trips.
