An online exhibition of oil paintings by Elizabeth Barsham, featuring paintings of Tasmania
Tasmanian Gothic

A selection of strange and beautiful paintings from Tasmania. Other Tasmanian Gothic sites. Tasmanian Gothic home page. Miss Barsham's Facebook Page. Unease in the foliage. There is always something slightly unnerving about Elizabeth Barsham's oil paintings although such a feeling often defies analysis. Just out of sight of the evocative rural scene or the smiling family group some unpleasantness is possibly lurking behind the sinuous foliage. 7 November, 2009.

Art, travel, Tasmanian history, events - whatever takes my fancy. Just ask - or go to. Wallowing in Nostalgia - People's Day at the Royal Hobart Show. A couple of weeks ago I enjoyed myself at the Royal Melbourne Show, but couldn't help feeling that although it had lots of colour, movement and noise it lacked the certain Something one finds at the Hobart Show. So I went to the Hobart Show on Peoples' Day. The produce hall was infested by a fearsome horde of scarecrows created by different groups of schoo...

Art, travel, Tasmanian history, events - whatever takes my fancy. Just ask - or go to. The Lichen Hill walk is considered one of the best short walks on the Tasman Peninsula. Of course, this depends how you define "short" - at about twenty kilometres it's certainly shorter than the stroll out to Cape Pillar, for example. And it certainly is a beautiful walk if you don't mind having to push through a bit of prickly scrub. Pirates' Bay from sea level; as most people see it. This is another view. This is th...

Art, travel, Tasmanian history, events - whatever takes my fancy. Just ask - or go to. What an entertaining evening of Environmental Action – well, other people acted, I just watched from a safe distance on the sidelines. First up, a stirring speech by Senator Christine Milne at the opening of the 2013 Weld Echo exhibition. At the Long Gallery, Salamanca Arts Centre. Off the platform, Miranda explained. Otherwise the ropes get twisted. More used to braving political challenges in the Senate than ...Chris...

This was the original track from Geeveston to the Harz area before all those roads were put in. We started from the end of Bennett's Road, making it a much shorter walk. O is for Obstacles. Art, travel, Tasmanian history, events - whatever takes my fancy. Just ask - or go to. Photos - 2015 Glover Prize. Home from the partying to open the 2015 Glover Prize exhibition. This is Australia's richest prize for landscape painting, and I was one of the 42 finalists selected from almost 300 entries. I didn't win, but my painting sold and the organisers treated us artists very well. Here are the photos to prove it:. A moody sunset shot to set the scene. Art, travel, Tasmanian history, events - whatever takes my fancy. Just ask - or go to. Agricultural Gothic - visiting Shene stables. That was a long time ago. The last of our ponies has long gone to that verdant pasture in the sky and we are getting old. But the magnificent stables at Shene are still standing and the view across the paddocks towards Mount Wellington is still recognisable as the one Mary Morton Allport and John Glover painted in the early nineteenth century. Working up an appetite. So you...

Jonathan Swift was very precise with the location of Lilliput, placing it to the north west of Van Diemen's Land – that is, his imaginary country was closer to home than the real island. You might not recognise the name Bigge's Bridge either, but you will certainly recognise the bridge. It is, of course, Richmond Bridge, the oldest stone bridge in Australia.
