Teaching Ain't For Heroes: What do I do with my kid's reading level?

http://teachingaintforheroes.blogspot.com/2015/02/what-do-i-do-with-my-kids-reading-level.html

Teaching Ain't For Heroes. From the inside of a public school in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Sunday, February 8, 2015. What do I do with my kid's reading level? If the book is "too easy" it might just be on a topic your child enjoys. Just because it's a breeze for them to read doesn't mean that they aren't benefiting just from the act of reading for enjoyment. If the book is "too hard" this is a great time for you and your child to work together to read the book. Reading levels can tell you a lot, but ...

Teaching Ain't For Heroes. From the inside of a public school in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Monday, December 8, 2014. What to Send to the School Food Drive. It's that time of year again. Your child's school has either already started or is about to start collecting food. How can you make this a good experience to help your child appreciate the spirit of giving? How can you not be running around at the last second throwing together a bag of canned green beans and canned pineapple? 5 Juice - People need...

Teaching Ain't For Heroes. From the inside of a public school in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Thursday, October 7, 2010. What About Those Charter Schools? Charter schools. What are they? Is it just some buzz word you've heard associated with education? Charter schools are the wave of the future! Charter schools are magical havens where all is right with education! Charter schools will single handedly save education in America! It sounds nice, right? It does sound perfect, doesn't it? 1 The students are ...

Teaching Ain't For Heroes: What'd You Do Today?

http://teachingaintforheroes.blogspot.com/2014/11/whatd-you-do-today.html

Teaching Ain't For Heroes. From the inside of a public school in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Wednesday, November 5, 2014. What'd You Do Today? We've all had that conversation with our kids. You excitedly pick your child up from the carpool line and the first question you ask is "What do you do at school today? The answer most often is "Nothing.". Why do they do that? What'd you do today? Is only going to produce an irritated "NOTHING! Sometimes this doesn't work and my son just tells me he liked recess...

parentwin: Birthday parties in the modern age

http://www.parentwin.com/2015/08/birthday-parties-in-modern-age.html

Friday, August 7, 2015. Birthday parties in the modern age. My kids are turning seven next Monday, and to celebrate, I'm throwing them a party at a local bowling alley on Saturday. And so, I find myself here. Just a few days before this party. With three kids coming. This is how far we've wandered, people. Right now, though, we do have six kids coming, which is plenty for me. This coming school year, I will do my best to promote at least acquaintanceship with other parents. I will try to learn about ...

The Creative Adventures of Kat: OH MY TUTU! A Giveaway.

http://creativelykat.blogspot.com/2011/01/oh-my-tutu-giveaway.html

Wednesday, January 26, 2011. There is nothing I love more than making tutus. For me it is how I relax after a stressful day. As evidence of this my daughter has more tutus than I can count. I’ve traded tutus for cloth diapers, made them as birthday gifts even. Next to my sewing machine sits several totes, the largest tote the one full of tulle. Anytime I go to the local craft, hobby or fabric stores I buy several yards of tulle. Shimmer tulle, matte tulle, in all colors of the rainbow. January 26, 2011 a...

The Creative Adventures of Kat: Just Roll with It

http://creativelykat.blogspot.com/2011/01/just-roll-with-it.html

Monday, January 31, 2011. Just Roll with It. Our family has an upcoming vacation which involves over 10 hours on the road with three kids. When going over what keeps the three kids entertained we came to crayons and coloring books. In hopes of keeping things neat and tidy I decided to make some crayon rolls using the tutorial over at The Pleated Poppy. As always my first step is a trip to the fabric store. I brought the oldest with because I know he can be picky about patterns. Tales of an Unlikely Mother.

http://creativelykat.blogspot.com/2011/02/to-sew-or-not-to-sew.html

Friday, February 4, 2011. To Sew or Not to Sew. I came up with one idea and upon coming home and trying it, I was successful. I was quite happy with the results, although I still needed a needle and thread. I still wanted a new sew flower as well. I was sure that I could come up with something. After playing around with tulle for a bit I figured that one out as well. I’ve outlined the basic steps I took to create the two types of flowers. Wrap the ends of the tulle around the center and tie in a knot.

Much Ado About Cooking: June 2011

http://adoaboutcooking.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Much Ado About Cooking. Thursday, June 23, 2011. I needed to do a little therapeutic cooking. I dug through the fridge and drug out some ingredients that were getting ready to go bad and decided to see what I could do with them. I chopped up a cup and a half of mushrooms and added one chopped shallot. Then I sauteed them in a pan for about 3 minutes with a tablespoon of olive oil. Just enough to make them a little tender. Then I got out 5 eggs. Don't they look cool? Links to this post. Steak Diane and Re...

Much Ado About Cooking. Saturday, July 30, 2011. Lemony Orzo Veggie Salad. This is a recipe I modified from one I found at cookinglight.com. It was so delicious that I went ahead and made a second batch with even better results. This is great for summer. 3/4 cup uncooked orzo. 1/4 teaspoon Spice Island’s lemon peel. 3 tablespoons lemon juice. 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil. 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt. 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic. 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. 2 cups shredded chicken. The Creative Adventures of Kat: March 2011

http://creativelykat.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 15, 2011. Easy as 1 2 3. Step one was figuring how to take the seat off. Thankfully that was simple it was being held on by four screws on the underside of the chair. Step two was removing the faux leather. It seemed like each chair had about 40-50 staples holding that awful fabric on. Thankfully they pulled out easily and a pair of needle-nose pliers came in handy for removing any staples which were left behind. Good Now my chairs look much nicer and are much more my style. Now if you wer...

Teaching as best as I can, while still getting some gamer time in. My wife and I are avid nerds who also happen to love education. My perspective is, if it is a tool that can give an example and help a student learn, then it is a tool I will use for teaching. I have used games in the past to help students reach an understanding of a subject and this website will hopefully be dedicated to that process. Or something else entirely, I haven't decided yet.

Reflections on Teaching Alchemical Art to Grad Students. Asking Good Questions about Alchemy. January 9, 2011. Interestingly, it turned out that my students liked the lecture parts more than the class participation part. This was no problem in the sense that I can talk about this stuff until the cows come home, but it did leaving me feeling that I should have prepared more speeches, and perhaps should have brought in more xeroxed materials to look at and take notes on.
