November 24, 2010. November 24, 2010. One of the things we’re doing at Rattle are once a month ‘hackdays’. We’re doing hackdays to rapid prototype ideas we have, learn new technologies and have some fun. Previous hackdays have produced things like Wordr. And the Job Box. This month we created. Way to see what your friends’ are watching on the telly tonight. You’re probably coming here having played with the web app. If not then it’s probably worthwhile doing that first. Attention and Gesture – technogoggles

I’ve been thinking about how technologies manage our. A lot recently, and I’ve found this quote from John Lasseter and particularly the reference to Saint-Exupéry helpful in designing technologies and interfaces that are more attention aware. Job Box - Rattle

http://rattlecentral.com/job-box/index.html

The Job Box was a project devised to give increased visibility of what everyone on the team was working on - a particular issue with remote workers. Our solution was a set of 'job boxes', each of which featured a single knob which could be turned to one of 8 positions, representing the current projects that each person was working on. A simple web visualisation used the data from the boxes to show a simple, live-updating colour-coded view of what the team was up to. 72 John St, Sheffield, S2 4QU.

Wordr - Rattle

http://rattlecentral.com/wordr/index.html

Originating as an obvious joke, Wordr was a Twitter clone with a new limitation: you could only post one word at a time. There's no stopping some people though, and we soon discovered that one word could say a lot. A vocabulary cloud surfaced some of the interesting words people were using (often neologism and portmanteaus), although pleasingly 'tea' remained firmly at the top of the charts. The site attracted attention far and wide, and was even featured on TV as part of the BBC's Click programme.

The Pretend Fan Machine - Rattle

http://rattlecentral.com/fan-machine/index.html

The Pretend Fan Machine. With the 2010 World Cup fast approaching, we realised that some of us at Rattle knew more about international football than others, and that there were plenty of countries who none of us knew much about at all. We all wanted to watch plenty of matches though, and spectating is always more fun when you pick a side to support - but who to pick? We wondered whether a computer could help with this. Contact James if you'd like to chat about Rattle's work. 72 John St, Sheffield, S2 4QU.

A History of the World - Rattle

http://rattlecentral.com/history-world/index.html

A History of the World. A History of the World was a partnership project between the BBC and the British Museum, creating a radio programme and a website to document and discuss 100 key objects from the British Museum's collection. Rattle worked with the BBC to identify and develop opportunities for further audience engagement via the online experience. These ideas were presented as illustrated user journey storyboards, along with implementation details. 72 John St, Sheffield, S2 4QU.

Mr Fante's Games of Judgement - Rattle

http://rattlecentral.com/games-judgement/index.html

Mr Fante's Games of Judgement. Research into the psychology of human perception, inspired by reading Malcolm Gladwell's Blink, led us to an idea for a social game involving Facebook profile pictures, which was successfully pitched to the Channel 4 innovation fund 4iP. In return for opting their own profile picture into the game, players can learn a little about how other people judge them, allowing for a moment of reflection, as well as often being somewhat amusing. Muddy - Rattle

http://rattlecentral.com/muddy/index.html

Muddy was a tool we developed to automatically index and categorise web content. Starting as an experimental project, the concept was progressed to become a service used internally by the BBC. The service was innovative in its use of Wikipedia data. We designed the tool so that it would attempt to dynamically link key names and phrases to the relevant Wikipedia resources. Some of the ideas and technologies in the project were further developed in-house by the BBC for use in production systems.
