By the Southeastern Foot Trails Coalition (SEFTC). And the Benton MacKaye Trail Association (BMTA). Guest speakers, and the ribbon cutting followed by food, music and fun! Memorial Day Weekend Celebration in Coker Creek. On the porch of the. Coker Creek Welcome Center and Heritage Gift Shop. New Highway 68 at the 34 mile marker. May 24th, 25th, and 26th. From 11am to 3pm. The Gift Shop recently reopened with all new items. Baked goods, snacks, and refreshments will be available. Proceeds benefit the continuation of the Coker Creek Post Office. Live music, artist demonstration, spinning, and book signings are part of the celebration. Saturday – May 24th.

This year's events take place on Saturday, June 6, 2015. Sadly, less than 50 years later, timber and other resources were depleted and companies began heading west. They left in their wake the lands nobody wanted, a region plagued with unemployment, poverty, and limited natural resources. Cherokee National Forest was established June 14, 1920, from land acquired in southeast Tennessee. History of Tellico Plains, Tennessee. Fort Loudoun, British fort on the Little Tennessee River. The railroad eventually became profitable, in the early 1900s when Tellico Plains was the hub of a major lumbering industry and related industries, such as pulpwood and tannic acid production. Trains brought coal into town, and the mail went in and out on the train. Passenger service continued into Tellico Plains until August 15, 1953. The railway freight service was discontinued August 30, 1983.

Tellico Plains was designated a Trail Town in 2014 by the Southeastern Foot Trails Coalition (SEFTC) and the Benton MacKaye Trail Association (BMTA) as an exceptional location to visit for these activities. The SEFTC is a coalition of almost all the trail clubs within the Southeastern United States. The BMTA oversees the Benton MacKaye Trail, a 300-mile long-distance trail, which courses through the mountains just east of Tellico Plains and Coker Creek.
