Sometime last year | Fat is flavor
https://thatswhatyouthink.wordpress.com/2013/08/14/sometime-last-year
From the rooter to the tooter. August 14, 2013. I had a couple of weeks where I was really on a roll with dinner, and I remembered to pull out the Bronica to document these rare events. But all the dust accumulating in the apartment thwarted my efforts to scan the negatives myself, so the developed rolls just sat. And sat. And sat. Until! Last week, on a very good tip from Brian. I found a guy who could fix my problem. (In this town, there is always a guy who can fix your problem.) (Thanks, Brian! You ar...

From the rooter to the tooter. December 13, 2014. The tonnarelli cacio e pepe at Flavio al Velovevodetto in Testaccio has left us pining for this dish days and weeks afterward. And now that I’ve found Saveur’s excellent recipe. Responses to “When in Rome”. Feed for this Entry. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. First time for everything | Fat is flavor

From the rooter to the tooter. Hot kitchen, lazy dinners. It’s pom season. First time for everything. October 11, 2011. I’ve made meatballs of all kinds. Hundreds of dumplings, meatballs that used to be dumplings. As well as headcheese. But somehow I had never thought to make meatloaf, which is a less fussy relative of all of these. Unorthodox in so many ways, but definitely worth repeating. We liked this. Responses to “First time for everything”. Feed for this Entry. October 11, 2011 at 4:13 pm. Address...

From the rooter to the tooter. What I had for Thanksgiving dinner this year. Try this at home. November 10, 2008. Tags: new york city. The only thing better than a Peter Pan doughnut. Is a Peter Pan doughnut, grilled. DOUGHNUTS. ON. GRILL.). Everyone was skeptical; some were curious. My instincts told me that there was potential for magic here. Responses to “Try this at home”. The king’s soup | Fat is flavor
https://thatswhatyouthink.wordpress.com/2010/03/19/the-kings-soup
From the rooter to the tooter. The gastronomic wonders of a tiny island. The king’s soup. March 19, 2010. In what is steadily gaining on Thanksgiving as a favorite holiday cooking and eating tradition, I made corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick’s Day. Like last year. I got my beef brisket from the always excellent Dickson’s Farmstand Meats. Unassuming looking, I know, but this soup is special. Not for nothing is it known as “the king’s soup.”. In making it, I thought of my favorite red lentil soup.

The Salted Cod: The Mighty Loaf
http://thesaltedcod.blogspot.com/2008/12/mighty-loaf.html
Christmas was very laid back this year, but I did find one small gift under the old tree. I got this very interesting dough rising basket called a brotform from Germany. After the first rise or proof you punch down the dough and place the ball in this well floured brotform for the final proofing. The dough rises around the brotform canes giving your bread a really cool design similar to a floury crop circle. The bread recipe I used is the most basic sourdough recipe available from King Arthur Flour.
The Salted Cod: Here is our Share! Week 12
http://thesaltedcod.blogspot.com/2007/08/here-is-our-share-week-12.html
Here is our Share! Starting at the top from left to right: arugula, mizuna, celery, corn, potatoes, cherry tomatoes. The scent was so thick in the air you could smell it on your clothes and hair the next day; a delicious combination of smokey, sweet and spicy. We are trying to think of what a true New England scent would be to represent summer. Maybe low tide or rotting cod from the fisherman’s catch. Anyway, back to week 12:. Week 12 is all about corn chowder! We made LOTS of corn chowder…. Join our gro...

The Salted Cod: Waiting for the dough to rise.
http://thesaltedcod.blogspot.com/2008/11/waiting-for-dough-to-rise.html
Waiting for the dough to rise. I just picked up a great book called Ultimate Bread. By Eric Treuille. Ultimate Bread is very straight forward, with great photography of each step involved. I've been meaning to try to make bagels for quite some time and their recipe is fast and easy. 2 Tsp Dried yeast. 1 1/2 Tbs sugar. 1 1/2 Tsp Salt. 1 Sprinkle the yeast and sugar into 100ml of the water in a bowl. Leave four 5 minutes and then stir to dissolve. 6 Knock back the dough, then leave to rest for 10 minutes.
Bread and Butter Press: April 2008

Tuesday, April 29, 2008. Maybe I'll try to make some transliterative concoctions by guessing what the short recipes detail. Saturday, April 26, 2008. The thing about cake is, it's bittersweet. This is the centripetal cake of birthdays, of homecomings and goings. Layered. Frosted. Cut and laid on its side. It’s full of meaning, but saccharine sweet. That is to say, something is always lost in the utter joy of cake, its insufferable celebration swallows disparity. It's certainly not all. Do you owe me the ...

Friday, June 27, 2008. Monday, June 23, 2008. Bananas do the darndest things. I'm making banana bread with some ripe bananas that I had put in the freezer last week. Look how they defrost! So weird and beautiful. So weird! Monday, June 16, 2008. It was too hot for tarts. And the oven here is more than fickle. But ice cream - ice cream. I thought - that would go so nicely with a rhubarb compote. Rhubarb, Strawberry and Fennel Compote. This is sort of a recipe and sort of a fend-for-yourself-it's-worth-it.

That's What Ze Said | Random thoughts of a cynical and satirical Silicon Valley Jew
That's What Ze Said. Random thoughts of a cynical and satirical Silicon Valley Jew. How come she always does all the talking? March 24, 2016. March 24, 2016. 8220;That’s what she said.” This phrase, muttered from bars to board rooms, has gone from what was once an inappropriate frat phrase to what is now common usage. While the connotation is still one better left to a college dorm, the fact that we always discuss what “she” said is what really gets my goat. Beginning with The Little Mermaid and worsenin...
