Jettison Cocoon: Book Review: The Son (2013) by Phillipp Meyer
http://www.jettisoncocoon.com/2014/03/book-review-son-2013-by-phillipp-meyer.html
Book and movie reviews and some other random opinions. Thursday, March 6, 2014. Book Review: The Son (2013) by Phillipp Meyer. A lot of the reviews of The Son. Have labeled it as The Great American Novel. I won't give The Son. The Eli section of the novel is one of the great western stories in American literature, albeit one that probably owes a debt of inspiration to Thomas Berger's Little Big Man. Even with some bumps along the way, The Son. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Jettison Cocoon: Film Review: '71 (2015)
http://www.jettisoncocoon.com/2015/04/film-review-71-2015.html
Book and movie reviews and some other random opinions. Thursday, April 30, 2015. Film Review: '71 (2015). If you want to make a decent thriller these days, your first step to success is to make sure your budget is low. The lower the better. A budget that wouldn't pay for Robert Downey Jr's per diem on The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Is a beautiful example of this. What gives the film a lot of its tension is that Hook is played by a relative unknown. Put a big star in this role and the audience knows he'...

Jettison Cocoon: Film Review: The Organizer (1963)
http://www.jettisoncocoon.com/2014/09/film-review-organizer-1963.html
Book and movie reviews and some other random opinions. Saturday, September 20, 2014. Film Review: The Organizer (1963). The list of films about strikes, unions, and labour disputes is a short one, and it's safe to say that almost none of them qualify as light entertainment. It's not a sub-genre known for laughs and whimsy. I'd never heard of The Organizer. And I really have to wonder why, because this has to be the Lawrence of Arabia. Of the organized labour sub-genre of films. Yes, it's that good. Just ...

Jettison Cocoon: July 2015
http://www.jettisoncocoon.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Book and movie reviews and some other random opinions. Friday, July 31, 2015. Film Review: Delitto d'amore (1974). In the 1960s and '70s Italian cinema seemed to specialize in reinventing film genres from other countries. The spaghetti western was a deconstruction of the American western with an added dollop of Japanese samurai films; giallo. Films were Hitchcock with more blood and less humour; and poliziotteschi. Were American cop noir. Films like The French Connection. Of that period ( Death Walks on ...

Jettison Cocoon: Book Review: Brushback (1998) by K.C. Constantine
http://www.jettisoncocoon.com/2012/07/book-review-brushback-1998-by-kc.html
Book and movie reviews and some other random opinions. Sunday, July 22, 2012. Book Review: Brushback (1998) by K.C. Constantine. If you've never heard of mystery writer K.C. Constantine you can probably blame the man himself. Constantine began his series of mystery novels set in fictional Rocksburg, PA, in 1972, and until 2011 he avoided publicity and interviews with the single-mindedness of a J.D. Salinger. That's a pity because he's a writer who deserved a much higher profile. Book Review: School for L...

Jettison Cocoon: Film Review: Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (1970)
http://www.jettisoncocoon.com/2012/03/film-review-investigation-of-citizen.html
Book and movie reviews and some other random opinions. Friday, March 2, 2012. Film Review: Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (1970). The most shocking thing about this film, from a 2012 point of view, is that it wears its political heart on its sleeve. I mean, when's the last time you saw a film that made a political statement in a loud voice and did it in an imaginative and entertaining way? When they want to find a film that's anti-capitalist. Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion. Just c...

Jettison Cocoon: Film Review: The Seven-Ups (1973)

Book and movie reviews and some other random opinions. Thursday, October 27, 2011. Film Review: The Seven-Ups (1973). Philip D'Antoni isn't a name you hear mentioned often when the history of modern cinema is discussed, but he certainly deserves some credit for two notable contributions to film history. The first is the car chase. D'Antoni was the producer of Bullitt, The French Connection,. Now there were certainly car chases before Bullitt. And The French Connection. Isn't cop noir if only because Stev...

Jettison Cocoon: Film Review: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Book and movie reviews and some other random opinions. Monday, June 15, 2015. Film Review: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). Is the supersized, high fat and sodium content addition to the Mad Max. Franchise. Instead of one kick ass lead character (Max), why not two? Why cheap out with only one evil, ugly, deranged warlord? And keep the car chases virtually continuous, sort of like the free refills at McDonalds' pop machines. For all your top villains. On the plus side, Fury Road. Just click on the above image a...
