The 132.5ci (2160cc) Grey In-Line Six. The 138cu (2262cc) Grey In-Line Six. The 149/179/X2/161 and 186 Red In-Line Six. In February 1965Holden launched the HD with an X2 option - a 179 fitted with twin carburettors, a modified camshaft and low restriction exhaust. The result: the first factory go-fast, with 140 horses (105kW) under the bonnet.

While in York W.A. during Christmas 1997, I discovered a vehicle which looked like a 48-215, but was amazed when I read the notice describing this vehicle. Here, thanks to The York Motor Museum, I have the text of that notice. HOLDEN 48-215 (FX) PROTOTYPE. 6 cylinder OHV 2160 cc. The Holden RD001 or the Hurricane was first shown to the public in 1969. This car had a 5 Litre mid-mounted V8 engine, sat less than 40 inches off the ground and had a highway guidance system and a television for rear vision included. Even for a concept car, it was way ahead of it's time. Note that the front end could easily be mistaken for that of a Corvette Stingray of early seventies vintage.

Scattered throughout this page you will find reproductions of the Holden Lion in some of the forms it has taken through the years. These are not in any order, nor is the selection complete, but they do show the evolution of the symbol of the Great Australian Car. This design was too detailed for embossing on a small plate such as Fisher was using. A new emblem was needed. A Wembley Lion medallion was chosen, depicting an Egyptian lion, the symbol of the Wembley Exhibition which was held in London in 1924...

THE EARLY HOLDEN PAGE. Welcome to the Early Holden Web Page. This page is devoted to Holden vehicles built between 1948 (48-215) and 1968 ( HR ). There are also links to other sites which may be of interest to all lovers of 'Old Iron'. It is one of the best remembered Holden ads. Football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars. Although not one of the most successful, according to the sales graphs, what it did say was that by all and any standards Holden is the benchmark for Australian motoring.
