The Autism Teacher: Lunch, part 2

http://theautismteacher.blogspot.com/2009/10/lunch-part-2.html

A blog about teaching students with autism. Search The Missing Piece. Lunch, part 2. In a continuation from the last post, as promised, here is our lunchtime routine. I call students, one at a time, into the bathroom to wash their hands. After washing hands, the student goes into the kitchen. They get their plate from the counter and carry it to their seat. Then I call the next student. We sit with the students at the table and encourage social communication. Attainment. Makes some great placemats. The s...

A blog about teaching students with autism. Search The Missing Piece. This weekend I attended the Autism Society of America national conference in Pittsburgh and am feeling excited about work again - genuine excitement! More than that, I've been re-inspired to be an active member of the autism community and share - which means a renewed commitment to blogging here. Hold me accountable! Not in my opinion! And I have plenty left to learn! Topics I plan to write about in the near future include. Template by...

The Autism Teacher: March 2013

http://theautismteacher.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

A blog about teaching students with autism. Search The Missing Piece. Anyway, I feel like I've neglected this blog - even though I'm not strictly an "autism teacher" this year, I still realize that most of what I do in my class would very much be applicable in an "autism class", especially since over 2/3 of my class has autism :-). First thing we did was make these foam egg crafts (I got the materials from Wal-Mart):. Next we made baskets:. Next up: adorable bunny eggs! What is Easter without dyeing eggs?

Challenges Make Life Interesting: My Classroom

http://challengesmakelifeinteresting.blogspot.com/p/my-classroom.html

The program I teach in, YCAP (Young Children with Autism Program), is designed into zones. One area for each adult in the classroom, I am blessed to have two paraprofessionals in my class this year, which with me makes three adults. Read more about zoning in my blog post here. Entry to our Classroom. Each child is designated a color and the feet show the students where to stand in line. Overhead view of my classroom arranged in 3 zones. I work in the teal zone on writing, reading, and communication.
