Connecting With The Community. We Are The Bio Charmers! We are a team of four 7th grade students at Shrewsbury Borough School in New Jersey. We have researched and experimented with biochar, an organic fertilizer. We decided to perform this study as a response to information we gathered about harmful effects of commercial fertilizers on well water used for drinking in southern New Jersey. Connecting With The Community. Biochar is an organic fertilizer. It is made from char (charcoal scraped from burnt wood) and other natural materials. There is no specific recipe. We made ours from bone meal, peat moss, and char from sticks and branches. It has been around for thousands of years and was used by ancient Amazonian Indians. For more information, take a look at our PowerPoint. It includes information on what biochar is, how it's used, and why it is important. Biochar power point.ppt.
The Problem -

Connecting With The Community. What problem have we tried to solve? In southern New Jersey, high levels of radium have been found in the drinking water coming from wells. The well water from the Cohansey aquifer in southern New Jersey exceeds safe levels of radium and drinking the water can cause bone cancer as well as cancer of the head sinuses. The radium in the groundwater is directly linked to the phosphates contained in commercial fertilizers. Why did we choose this problem? Create a free website.

Connecting With The Community. Who did we contact for help? In addition to our research, we contacted Andrea Spahn, our Watershed Ambassador. We have met with her several times and she helped us test our groundwater. We have also contacted and visited with Dr. Stephanie Murphy, Assistant Director at Rutgers Soil Testing Laboratory, to experience what happens at an actual laboratory. They have both been very helpful to us in completing our experiment. Who will we share our findings with?
