You CAN make a difference. Boosting fish farming in Singapore: what environmental impact? Singapore fish farms to contribute 15% of our fish supply in the next five years, up from the current 4%. This is the plan by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA), as part of efforts to diversify and stabilise Singapore's food supply. How many fish farms do we have? According to media reports. Singapore has 105 fish farms. Where are these fish farms located? Some off Lazarus Island. And off Pulau Semakau.

wild shores of singapore: Beting Bronok's slow death continues
http://wildshores.blogspot.com/2015/08/beting-bronoks-slow-death-continues.html
You CAN make a difference. Beting Bronok's slow death continues. An overdose of nudibranchs at Beting Bronok this morning! I saw about six of these fat Ceratosoma gracillimum. More commonly seen by divers in reefs. We also came across many fascinating marine creatures. But alas, Beting Bronok continues to decline and appears to be slowly dying. I saw six of these black Haekel's anemones. The largest number of them that I've seen on a shore. This is similar to what we saw in Jun 2014. And many in Jul 2013.

wild shores of singapore: Missing sponge gardens at Pulau Ubin
http://wildshores.blogspot.com/2015/08/missing-sponge-gardens-at-pulau-ubin.html
You CAN make a difference. Missing sponge gardens at Pulau Ubin. Besides Chek Jawa, there are other Ubin shores that are just as beautiful. A small team explored one such shore this morning well before dawn. Alas, the sponges and other colourful marine life we saw on the rocks in the past are missing. We saw a similar decline recently at Chek Jawa. As well as Changi. Kok Sheng first brought us here in Dec 2009. And we returned in May 2010. Amd Gnarled sea fans. I saw one long Asparagus sea fan. There wer...

wild shores of singapore: Moonlight survey of East Coast Park
http://wildshores.blogspot.com/2015/07/moonlight-survey-of-east-coast-park.html
You CAN make a difference. Moonlight survey of East Coast Park. A small team returns to survey a sandy stretch of East Coast Park that has been taken over by seagrasses! With the Bonnet snails and fig snails we saw, this shore reminds me of the Lost Coast. There were lots and lots of small to medium sized Cake sand dollars. Sand dollars are preyed upong by the Grey bonnet snail. Here's a half buried snail that appears to be sneaking up to a sand dollar. I finally found a small patch of live Button snails.

wild shores of singapore: Fish farms dumping dead fishes?
http://wildshores.blogspot.com/2013/07/fish-farms-dumping-dead-fishes.html
You CAN make a difference. Fish farms dumping dead fishes? Lots of dead fishes at Lim Chu Kang mangroves. I could smell them long before I saw them. And lots of questions came to my mind as I checked out the situation. Thanks to the alert by Andy Dinesh who shared about the dead fishes he has been seeing since 29 Jun (Sat) at Lim Chu Kang. And Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Here's a view of the fish farms on the horizon from the mangroves at Lim Chu Kang. But some of the fishes looked somewhat freshly dead.

wild shores of singapore: Sandflies: the bane of our shores
http://wildshores.blogspot.com/2009/08/sandflies-bane-of-our-shores.html
You CAN make a difference. Sandflies: the bane of our shores. Sandflies are the beasts I most dread on the shore. I fear them even more than mosquitos. Because I can't see or feel them when they bite. I only find out I've been attacked a few hours or a day later, when the bite marks itch ferociously. And continue to itch for weeks. Often turning into hideous ulcerating wounds that make people wonder if I have some sort of communicable disease. This photo taken by James. Why do they bite us? In fact, as a...

wild shores of singapore: Terumbu Hantu in the rain
http://wildshores.blogspot.com/2015/08/terumbu-hantu-in-rain.html
You CAN make a difference. Terumbu Hantu in the rain. This morning, we surveyed Terumbu Hantu mainly to check for damage caused by the grounding of MV Nautica in Nov 2014. Thanks to the four brave hearts who joined in the survey despite the rain! This is a photo of the MV Nautica a large live-aboard dive boat which was seen high and dry on the living reefs of Terumbu Hantu on 9 Nov 2014. Photo by Toh Chay Hoon on facebook. The area as seen in Jan 2015. Among the other interesting creatures I saw was a li...
