Blogger's been fun, but it's time to move on. My new blog address is www.bookworm.pilcrow.biz. Thanks for stopping by, and I'll see you there! Posted by Julie on 5/30/2006. This is the reason I've been able to get so much reading done lately. Can you tell? It's a sandbox filled with water. My god, it keeps him happy for hours at a time. Hours, I said. On nice days, anyway. So I just get out a lawn chair and sit there with my book while he splashes and digs and fills and empties and swirls. The shelf that...

Bookworm: March 2005

http://thebookworm.blogspot.com/2005_03_01_archive.html

I forgot to give links to the recipients. Mrsd's blog is here. And Steve, aka Anonymous, doesn't have one. They are all fabulous bloggers, and I am honored that they came here and subjected themselves to this, uh, thingy. Next post topic: home birth. Posted by Julie on 3/26/2005. Hi, y'all. Sorry it took me so long to come up with these. I hope you like 'em. You're supposed to answer these on your own blog, and then give five questions to your first five commenters (commentators? Do you take commissions?

Bookworm: July 2005

I can't leave you all without passing on this. Posted by Julie on 7/29/2005. I have been suffering from blog withdrawal these last few days. I've been working hard on a project that I had to get done before we go away tomorrow, and I've not had a minute to spare for blogdom. Yes, we're going away tomorrow, for a week at family camp. Guess what one of the activities for the grownups is going to be? A book discussion group. The book? Heh, heh, it's Kite Runner. See you on August 6! My favorite of the serie...

I have a crush on the grandmother of my son's little playmate. I wrote about this book in my very first blog post. And I guess I must have talked about it at playgroup. Needless to say, I was totally flattered that the mom had mentioned me to the grandma, and the grandma even knew my name.) She's reading it right now, using a cookbook holder to prop it up. So we had this great conversation about that, and other books. She said she just finished One Hundred Years of Solitude. About the sensory table.

Bookworm: A perfect number

http://thebookworm.blogspot.com/2005/12/perfect-number.html

After Christmas dinner with my husband's family a year ago I wrote a post about mathematical knitting. Courtesy of retired mathematician Grandma Joan. That post is the most popular one I've ever written, according to my site meter, and it continues to get Google hits on a regular basis. Therefore I am sure the blogosphere will be delighted to know that I've returned from Christmas dinner with some more math for you. This time it comes courtesy of retired mathematician Cousin Ward. Whatever is 31 x 16, th...

Bookworm: February 2005

http://thebookworm.blogspot.com/2005_02_01_archive.html

Vanity Fair, to my great surprise. A long time ago I used to belong to the Quality Paperback Book Club. I would not even open the envelope when it came, so that when I got the book of the month in the mail it would be a surprise. As a result, I still have a bunch of nice paperbacks I've never read, ha ha. One month the book was, oddly enough, Vanity Fair. Not a character, talking:. A couple of nights ago, my husband came back from the video store with the new movie. Yuk, I thought, not only because of th...

Books Are Pretty: November 2005

http://booksarepretty.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_archive.html

Friday, November 04, 2005. DeLisle is one of the few North Americans to view this closed country first hand, and interspersed between his many bits of black humor - complaints about the coffee (so horrible! The Chinese maid that wakes him up every morning at seven to give him water, no matter how many times he tells her he doesn't want to be disturbed, and North Korea's miserable version of ice cream, are the tension-making moments that show how far down the rabbit hole he had fallen. There's a question ...

Books Are Pretty: June 2006

http://booksarepretty.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 26, 2006. Dinner and a Show. Last week I called Steve after a long day toiling away in the salt mines at Big Machine and asked him if he and the kids wanted to meet me at Heaven on Seven. To use the last gift certificate we had. Originally we'd gotten our hands on four of them, and now we were going to meet for one last meal of crabcakes and gumbo before our free ride ended. Visit One: I will touch each bottle of hot sauce on the wall. At about this time, Alex and Chris asked if they could w...

Books Are Pretty: July 2005

Saturday, July 23, 2005. Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! A bus driver is taking a break, and asks your child to watch the bus for him. "Whatever you do," he warns, "Don't let the pigeon drive the bus! As soon as he leaves, the pigeon pops up and the begging begins, starting with polite wheedling and finishing in a full blown toddler temper tantrum. Like Kevin Henke, author and Emmy-winning. Writer Mo Willems has a gift for creating excellent children's books. Pigeon. Posted by flea at 8:37 AM. I'd li...

Mimilou: March 2005

http://mimilou.blogspot.com/2005_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 29, 2005. Don't Send in the Clowns. So we went for a walk after dinner tonight, taking advantage of what had been a relatively mild day but by the time we embarked on our walk had become quite chilly and not nearly as pleasant as I had envisioned. Well, THAT was certainly a lot of past-perfect tense in one sentence, wasn't it? As we passed this one house on our street that suffers the misfortune of having a large, ugly grate plunked into the front of its yard, Sean paused. "What's that?

Wednesday, June 29, 2005. We Need To Talk About Kevin. For three years, Steve and I have gone to psychiatrist after psychologist, parenting class after special ed class, occupational therapy after social therapy. Short of medication, which is looming in the horizon, I think we have tried everything there is to try in order to answer the question of what to do with Alex. Therapeutic CDs, gross motor skill work, joint compression, the hug machine. My name is Alex. Do you want to play? I didn't recognize it...

Books Are Pretty: April 2006

http://booksarepretty.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 30, 2006. Hooway for Wodney Wat! When I was eighteen and doing summer stock in North Carolina, a bunch of us spent one of our days off hiking the Appalachian Trail. We stopped by a waterfall to take a break, and as we watched the water spill over the cliff and dash down to the churning pool below, Joanne gasped. Her eyes pinwheeled toward the rushing water for several minutes. "Whoa," she whispered. "Whoa.". Miss Fuzzleworth asked, "What's 2 2? They felt very, very uncomfortable.*. It was a...

Books Are Pretty: August 2005

http://booksarepretty.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, August 17, 2005. Ten Apples Up On Top. I'm probably way too close to this Dr. Seuss classic to be able to review it impartially.(the pseudonym he uses here, Theo Le Sieg, was used when he wrote the text but did not create the accompanying illustrations. "Le Sieg" is "Geisel," Seuss' real name, backwards.). Remember how those animals got those apples to balance on their heads like that? That was crazy stuff! And they drank milk out of glass bottles with the apples on their heads! It seemed like...

Friday, March 31, 2006. Manstealing for Fat Girls. Let's talk, at long last, about rainbow parties. In 2004, while giving a presentation at a sex toy party for a women's group in a tony northern suburb, the attendees grilled me pretty hard on what the young ladies are doing these days. Are they, like Oprah says, tossing salads in study hall and running cherry red lipstick over their puckers before lining up to give blowjobs in the bathroom? What's different about kids today is they live in a world with h...

Books Are Pretty: October 2005

http://booksarepretty.blogspot.com/2005_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 31, 2005. Charlie Parker Played Bebop. He grabbed a book off his bookshelf and handed it to me. He chirped. "Here, Mommy, read this book now! And he shot off downstairs into the kitchen, an area off-limits to my children and if I had my way, off-limits to my husband, too, because FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I WANT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD THAT BELONGS ONLY TO ME. The book he chose to distract me with was Chris Raschka's Charlie Parker Played Bebop. Never leave your cat alone! Downstairs, I heard th...

The book world - 'Cause reading is sexy
