A quick read for an open mind. The Olympics holds many a lesson for our cosmopolitan society. In stark comparison with the primeval carnage of last summer London riots, Britain’s capital city has whole-heartedly reasserted it’s position as one of the world’s greatest cities. The Olympic Games, as Lord Coe pithily put it, have truly shown the best of us. This entry was posted in Comment. And tagged Jess Ennis. Obama must join the partisan fray to win a second term. The Battle of the Pragmatists →. Merci p...

The Middle East « An Idle Moment

A quick read for an open mind. We must not let words on Iraq cloud our action in Syria. However, despite the daily reports of unrelenting atrocities in Homs and the mounting civilian death toll which includes the deaths of Marie Colvin, a war correspondent for the Sunday Times and Remi Ochlick, an award-winning French photographer, the dove arguments against Western engagement in Syria stack up. Despite the substantial ills that may lie ahead, for the people of the Middle East, the hat is over the wall&#...

The Battle of the Pragmatists « An Idle Moment

A quick read for an open mind. The Battle of the Pragmatists. Meanwhile, Mitt Romney’s charismatic running mate Paul Ryan failed to dazzle at the Republican conference in Florida. The much-needed bump in the polls that so invigorated John McCain’s campaign in 2008, when Sarah Palin enjoyed her intense yet brief spell of political stardom, has also failed to materialise. Of citizens who are their own masters, ‘ the more free, the more independent, and the more happy must be society itself’. Herein lies th...

A quick read for an open mind. James McQuillan- Funny Man of the 2009 Apprentice branches out. After you leave, but that really isn’t the case.’. This year, he has followed the series of. With keen interest and at times, distinct pleasure. As a previous contestant, McQuillan experienced a wide spectrum of emotions during his viewing. ‘It was really nice to be able to watch it without having my fingers over my eyes! That on exiting the show, time was really of the essence. ‘When you leave The Apprenti...

A quick read for an open mind. Finding the line on switch-hitting is almost impossible, but the shot must stay in the game. The rules established by the MCC are undoubtedly sensible and appropriate given the complex dilemma posed by the shot. However, the real debate revolves around the fairness of the shot in terms of maintaining the equality between bat and bowl that is so integral to intriguing test cricket. Furthermore, the accusation that it gives the batsman an unfair advantage simply doesn’t wash.

Social Issues « An Idle Moment

A quick read for an open mind. Should money really make the money go round? In an increasingly competitive job-market, we are, more than ever, socially defined by how much we earn. But does this drive our society? James Madison once wrote that ‘in all societies, distinctions are various and unavoidable’. Throughout history, humans have seeked to define themselves through status. In the modern world, the symbol of this status is money, and the equipment that money buys. With the increasing rise of crime, ...

US Politics « An Idle Moment

A quick read for an open mind. Obama must join the partisan fray in order to secure a second term. As Barack Obama looks forward to what will undoubtedly be an extremely hard fought and bitter election campaign against Mitt Romney in November, he could be forgiven for feeling slightly aggrieved that the random constellation of events in the political skyline have not aligned in his favour during his first term in office. This said, American presidential elections are won on home soil, not in foreign fiel...

A quick read for an open mind. Dust clouds blur judgement on North Korea. A tiny fishing village bombed on a serene Tuesday afternoon by heavy artillery fire. Burning buildings, sirens and civilian casualties. Just the latest evidence of North Korea’s unmistakable acceleration in aggression towards its Southern neighbour. Image – http:/ assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly fs/1.451638! Can Uncle Sam dampen the Dragon’s Fire. This said, how cold is this new froideur between East and West? In reality, the ‘Wash...
