Spider Hunt! - Mustard The Dinosaur

http://mustardthedinosaur.weebly.com/blog/spider-hunt

A Day in the Life of a Scientist. Today at lab group camp, a very exciting event occurred. Mike, one of the researchers in our lab, walked out of his room… and found a spider! Whilst this may, in fact, be the least exciting thing you can think of happening, or perhaps exciting purely because of the adrenaline that would start pumping as you run back in the room and scream for help, Mike was ecstatic. This was a very special spider. It was a male of the. Another Ph.D. student in our lab, Sophie, w...Unfor...

Back to work... - Mustard The Dinosaur

http://mustardthedinosaur.weebly.com/blog/back-to-work

A Day in the Life of a Scientist. Mustard and I had a great day at Science Alive yesterday. We had lots of insects and some microscopes and magnifying glasses so that people could get up close and personal. There was a huge crowd and so many interested kids and parents wanting to chat about insects! Being a scientist is not just about doing research - it's also about getting out there and sharing what you know! We're back in the office today, writing our research proposal and identifying wasps.

Under the microscope - Mustard The Dinosaur

http://mustardthedinosaur.weebly.com/blog/under-the-microscope

A Day in the Life of a Scientist. Today we took a break from writing our literature review to check out some of the wasps we are studying. They are pretty small, so we had to use a microscope that magnified the wasp so we could see it better. All the wasps have labels. To work out what the wasps are, we are using a key. There are different sorts of keys, but we are using a dichotomous key. Where each step asks you a question for which there are two possible answers. 1 The object has eyes (go to 2.).

About - Mustard The Dinosaur

http://mustardthedinosaur.weebly.com/about.html

A Day in the Life of a Scientist. I'm a science communicator/educator/science show performer/slime-making-expert. I could keep adding obliques for pages. I've spent a lot of time getting kids and older students excited about science, breaking down stereotypes and making science accessible and fun. Now I'm going back to the lab and learning to be a scientist again by completing a PhD research project in entomology (the study of insects). Want your own crocheted dinosaur? Why am I writing this blog?

A Day in the Life of a Scientist. The Natural History Museum, London. Mustard accompanied me as I visited the museum and the Hymenoptera (bees, ants and wasps) curator (in a museum, a curator is the scientist who looks after a particular collection) do some work on my PhD at the end of my Famelab trip. In the foyer, Mustard came face to face with a much bigger dinosaur. Mustard meets Charles Darwin! We found out that the museum cafe does really good cake. Yes, scientists like cake too! It all started whe...

A whole lot of genes (not the denim kind)  - Mustard The Dinosaur

http://mustardthedinosaur.weebly.com/blog/a-whole-lot-of-genes-not-the-denim-kind

A Day in the Life of a Scientist. A whole lot of genes (not the denim kind). Mustard is busy highlighting the notes on the journal articles we read. Mustard and I are of course still reading, note taking and starting to write our literature review. Technically this isn't due until six months into our Ph.D., but we really don't want it to take that long! Getting it done faster means more time for actually doing the science! Scientists represent this as a phylogeny. Like a tree of life. This is when two in...

First day of camp - Mustard The Dinosaur

http://mustardthedinosaur.weebly.com/blog/first-day-of-camp

A Day in the Life of a Scientist. First day of camp. It’s the first day of lab group retreat. The 13 or so members of our lab are on camp, surrounded by beautiful bush, and freezing our toes off. It’s cold! Most Ph.D. students are part of a ‘lab’ – a group of people who work on similar things and help each other out. In our lab group there are honours students. Honours is a one year research project you do before a Ph.D.), Ph.D. students. Mustard is braving the cold, windy weather at the campsite.

Where are the wasps kept? - Mustard The Dinosaur

http://mustardthedinosaur.weebly.com/blog/where-are-the-wasps-kept

A Day in the Life of a Scientist. Where are the wasps kept? Checking out more wasps today! We haven't collected any wasps ourselves yet, but there are plenty in the collection of the University that we're using to learn how to identify different species. Insect specimens can last a really long time when they are looked after. The oldest wasp specimens we looked at today were only from the 1980s, but the oldest pinned specimen in the world is a butterfly (. That means it is 313 years old! For a great summ...

To help us start learning about the wasps we will be studying. Stands for Doctor of Philosophy. It's a research project where you study something that gets you really excited, for about three years! It is normally the first time a scientist gets to choose what they are researching and what experiments they are going to do. Create a free website.
