While other skills, such as gear assembly, are a requisite part of getting in the water, they technically could be done by someone else (although this is not recommended). Mask clearing, however, is a solo skill, and the inabiility to perform it will easily ruin a dive. Once mastered, this is a skill you will use. Mask clearing can be broken down into 3 simple steps:.

Spanish For Diving

http://www.thedivingblog.com/spanish-for-diving

My wife and I have a modest use of the Spanish language that we used this past week in Cozumel, Mexico. It's always fun being able to interact with locals in their native language. A big hurdle for beginners is simply learning vocabulary. As such, it is commonly recommended to utilize some sort of flashcard system for learning new words. Many. However, recommend a smart flashcard system, like those built around spaced repetition. My personal favorite in this category is Anki. I always have a running list...

The Sea on Fire

http://www.thedivingblog.com/sea-on-fire

The Sea on Fire. We don't see much diving fiction, besides maybe a few scenes from Clive Cussler novels. In. The Sea on Fire. Author Howard Cunnell wisely foregoes the diving-as-action approach and presents the emotion and sensation of diving that we feel through the main character, Kim. As a diver and someone who writes about diving, I was intrigued when I heard of this novel and how it would capture these feelings in words. The Sea on Fire. Is a book about Kim hammering out his personal philosophy, try...

Weight, Buoyancy, and Streamlining

http://www.thedivingblog.com/weight-buoyancy-streamlining

Weight, Buoyancy, and Streamlining. There are many tell-tale signs that your weighting is off underwater. For instance, you may balloon to the surface near the end of the dive. There are other, more subtle clues that your weights could use some fine tuning. One of these is how. You are in the water. When you're underweighted, you have to continuously kick down to keep yourself at depth, resulting in a profile position with your legs high in the water. Fixing the problem may not be so easy as putting more...

Reef Rants: March 2011

http://reefrants.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Thoughts from an underwater tourist. Monday, March 21, 2011. I've never seen a thresher shark. Before this video. They are majestic looking with their long tail. From which they get their name. I looked up info about them and found this tidbit on wikipedia. To be interesting: When hunting schooling fish. Thresher sharks are known to "slap" the water, herding and stunning prey.[5] The elongated tail is used to swat smaller fish, stunning them before feeding. Thresher sharks are one of the few shark.

Reef Rants: October 2010

http://reefrants.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Thoughts from an underwater tourist. Thursday, October 14, 2010. I have a fascination about the worms that are found in the ocean. The unique ones I've seen don't look like the worms we see here on the earth. Take for instance the Christmas Tree worms in my previous post. You'd never guess that those critters are actually worms. Check out this photo that I found on IslandTimeGallery.com. Monday, October 11, 2010. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Follow my diving adventures here at Reef Rants. Scuba Diving Blo...

Reef Rants: September 2010

http://reefrants.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Thoughts from an underwater tourist. Sunday, September 26, 2010. Diving with Charleston Scuba. We went out with Charleston Scuba. To dive on the Little Garden Ledges. Surprisingly there were more women divers on the boat than I can remember in quite some time. I enjoyed that fact immensely. The surface was relatively calm with a breeze and light chop. We encountered some rain at one point, but it was refreshing and brief. Co-owner of Charleston Scuba, drove us on his wonderful boat, the Trinity. Sea Urch...

Reef Rants: June 2010

http://reefrants.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Thoughts from an underwater tourist. Monday, June 21, 2010. Some Days Everything Is A Lesson. After our trip to Boynton Beach, Lee and I decided to do some black water diving. This type of diving occurs in the Cooper River up by Goose Creek and Cypress Gardens. Which is about 45 minutes north of where I live in Mt. Pleasant. And it's called black water diving because there zero visibility for the most part. The water is brackish. Meaning a combination of salt and fresh water. While this was easily the wo...

Reef Rants: Octopus Eats Shark

http://reefrants.blogspot.com/2011/09/octopus-eats-shark.html

Thoughts from an underwater tourist. Thursday, September 8, 2011. Check out this amazing footage of a shark being captured and eaten by an octopus. If you turn the sound on after about a minute and 1/2 in you'll hear some amazing facts about what you're watching. No need to approve this comment, I just have a question. If this is something youd consider, please feel free to email me alex at proscubasites dot com and hopefully we can work something out. August 28, 2013 at 1:59 AM. View my complete profile.

Reef Rants: Preparing For Our First Dives Of The Season

http://reefrants.blogspot.com/2014/06/preparing-for-our-first-dives-of-season.html

Thoughts from an underwater tourist. Friday, June 27, 2014. Preparing For Our First Dives Of The Season. Our first dives of the season are scheduled for next week. I'm so excited. This will be my first time in the water since our Jamaica honeymoon last September and my foot reconstruction surgery this past December. I pride myself on being a safe diver. That said I've made it a practice to always test my gear before I getting back in the water after being out for several months. So four dives are planned...
