CHICKADEES and TITMICE and VERDIN. Seen in The Woodlands, TX). Carolina Chickadee, juvenile. Seen in The Woodlands, TX). Tufted Titmouse, juvenile. Also known as the Mexican Titmouse. Is native to southern Texas, Oklahoma and east-central Mexico. The bird is around 6 long, with rusty flanks, gray upper parts, and a whitish belly. The male has a long, dark black crest that is usually erect, while the female's crest is not as dark. Verdin (a family all it's own!

The Belted Kingfisher is the only one that ranges throughout most of North America. (The Rio Grande Valley is the only place in the U.S. where you might see all three kingfishers at any one time.). These are females . the name belted comes from the glue-gray band across the breast. The female has a chestnut-colored band as well. There was a bit of rivalry here!

Seen in The Woodlands, TX). The long-billed lhrasher is the brown thrasher of the Rio Grande and Corpus Christi, Texas, area. They are very similar, but the long-billed thrasher has grayer cheeks and it's breast streaks are more black, rather than brown.

Seen in The Woodlands, TX). Red-shouldered Hawk watching for his dinner. Flying away with his captured crawfish! Identification: Brown above with reddish barring across light breast. Brownish-red shoulders. The dark tail is crossed by narrow white bands. Note the yellow eyes of the hawk above and below;. These are juvenile/1st year hawks. Their even breast streaks are up and down, as opposed to the orange horizontal bars of the adult. Seen in The Woodlands, TX). Red-tailed Hawk - a little windblown!

Only 8' tall, these little guys actually have a low trilling whistle, NOT a screech! The bill of the Eastern screech-owl is pale green-yellow; the western's is black. Look at the size - those are his TOES in the doorway! Like the bluebird, screech owls often rely on homemade nesting places, as deforestation has removed much of their natural habitat.).
