The Feather and the Rose: June 2015

Monday, June 22, 2015. The Do's and Don't's of telling people you're an aspiring novelist. Check out my latest motivational mug:. It's perfect for writing. "Making it happen" at the notebook/keyboard is what it's all about, right? For us writers, that's where the battles are fought and won. Constantly. CONSTANTLY. THINK OF A NEW QUESTION, PEOPLE. They haven't yet, so I'm getting better at dealing with this. Here are my top tips:. Be honest. Lying is bad for you. I am considering going to grad school.".
The Feather and the Rose: #BookshelfStyle

Friday, March 11, 2016. My bookshelf style, in haiku because haiku* are mercifully short, unlike novels:. Had to provide a place in the world where a Brent Weeks novel snuggles up against the Ad Herennium. Calmly sits beside Hamlet. This is the proper plural form. I checked the OED. And the OED knows. Friday, February 12, 2016. How to Seduce a Writer. If you have the good sense to follow the online adventures of the legendary Patrick Rothfuss, perhaps you saw his last blog post. Regarding the beautiful Valentine's Day cards. His Worldbuilders team has begun to produce. Also featured in that post was some advice from Neil Gaiman. Neil Gaiman suggests that you send your writer:. In honor of upcoming Valentine's Day, I offer ten more ways to seduce a writer:. 1 Take them to a library. If you've been wond...
The Feather and the Rose: November 2015
http://www.thefeatherandtherose.com/2015_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 30, 2015. In October, I traveled to Alaska to stay with some friends. I was a week in Anchorage, a week on Kodiak Island, and made a brief stop in Portland on my way back to my own bit of California. I'd never been to Alaska before, but had heard enough stories from my friends that I'd formed a pretty solid image of snowy wasteland and turbulent seas populated with almost mythical beasts. I almost felt like I'd seen it all before. Not because of pictures or ordinary deja vu, though, but ...
The Feather and the Rose: October 2015
http://www.thefeatherandtherose.com/2015_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 13, 2015. Writing is slow and unexciting to the outside world right now. So let's talk about something else. An outrage committed in the name of progress-for-the-sake-of-progress- one of my favorite kinds of outrage to be outraged about. So here it is: Celestial Seasonings is CHANGING THEIR PACKAGING. Old packaging: White-tailed deer look on in wonder as preternaturally large peppermint candies come white water rafting down the river that flows from majestic pine-spotted mountains. Old p...

My blog is almost seven years old. Something I only realised recently. Going back over the years I have changed so much, and I thought that it might be a good idea to shine a light on some older posts that I think are worth a re-read. So, dusting off some of my vintage posts. Victorian mystery and detective fiction: an evolving genre. How I heard the words: "Will you marry me? The Netherlands: Emmen and the fictitious bicycle tour? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Just a quick though...

http://scribeswindow.blogspot.com/2005/06/victorian-mystery-and-detective.html
Monday, June 27, 2005. Victorian Mystery and Detective Fiction: an evolving genre. Within Victorian society, mystery and detective fiction was overwhelmingly popular and was written for an audience of its time. This type of fiction used idiosyncratic language of its day, social standing was often portrayed and domestic conditions were exposed. Examples are Le Fanu's Gothic. The murdered cousin,. The Victorian mystery and detective story frequently used poison, such as nightshade or arsenic as a murder we...
scribeswindow: What I've been reading lately...The illusion of murder
http://scribeswindow.blogspot.com/2012/03/what-ive-been-reading-latelythe.html
Friday, March 16, 2012. What I've been reading lately. The illusion of murder. Have you seen that old Hollywood movie, The Great Race. Starring Natalie Wood and Tony Curtis? In it Natalie Wood admirably portrays the feisty nineteenth century reporter, Maggie DuBois, dressed to the nines and always looking a million dollars as she races around the world and reports for her newspaper along the way. I have read that Maggie DuBois is loosely based on Nellie Bly. Secondly I need to point out that my blog posts...
scribeswindow: The Simpsons and a consuming popular culture
http://scribeswindow.blogspot.com/2005/06/simpsons-and-consuming-popular-culture.html
Wednesday, June 22, 2005. The Simpsons and a consuming popular culture. In the 1990’s, The Simpsons, was a television show that subverted the traditional ideals of the happy family that was usually portrayed on television. It is a show that is often charged with depicting dysfunction, and in so doing, shows how a ‘real’ family behaves. Here is an interesting question. Just what are the effects of popular culture and a television show like The Simpsons, upon mass society? 8221; (Cantor, 2001, p.102)&#...

Monday, February 13, 2012. It's always been my theory that criticism is really just veiled autobiography; whenever someone writes about a piece of art, they're really just writing about themselves. You may expect all vampires that are staked to turn into dust, and if they don't you may be vaguely disappointed. This vague disappointment may manifest into feeling a little disappointed in what you are reading. This question was brought to us by The Blue Bookcase. Links to this post. Labels: Literary blog hop.

The Feather and the Rose
Monday, July 13, 2015. What do you mean, IF I finish my novel? We here at The Feather and the Rose are by no means qualified to give the full gamut of publishing advice yet. But a few weeks ago we discovered that I had some things to say about how to tell people you're an aspiring writer. It can be tricky when people are hearing about your writing for the first time. Has anyone ever said THIS to an aspiring writer? But what about the opposite? Are you EVER going to submit something? NO LYING IS BAD.
