AncientOfDaze: You brought 'er, you Trotter
http://patricktoner.blogspot.com/2006/10/you-brought-er-you-trotter.html
Musings of an artistic, literary, political and intellectual nature. Plus I include a joke-of-the-day. Monday, October 23, 2006. You brought 'er, you Trotter. Well, Love at a Loss was kind of a loss. I actually missed the annoying gang from The Rover and as I was reading found myself wishing that Willmore would materialize and challenge Beaumine to a sword fight or dump Bonsot into the sewer or somesuch. Beaumine rejects the institution of marriage but offers no alternatives. All action takes place i...

AncientOfDaze: September 2006

Musings of an artistic, literary, political and intellectual nature. Plus I include a joke-of-the-day. Sunday, September 24, 2006. Then all in haste I to the Presse it sent". Posted by Ancient of Daze @ 8:46 PM. I approached the readings of this course in a bass-ackwards fashion. I read Cavendish and Behn before reading The Female Wits. I was, therefore, surprised to see that marriage and romance weren’t major considerations in this play as they are in the others. Nonetheless, the satire of the play also...

AncientOfDaze: Tryal Size
http://patricktoner.blogspot.com/2006/11/tryal-size.html
Musings of an artistic, literary, political and intellectual nature. Plus I include a joke-of-the-day. Sunday, November 26, 2006. I found Baillie's "Introductory Discourse" more interesting than her play. From the first scene, I felt it would have worked better as a novel, which became a successful literary form because it explored the interior of a character, whereas drama relies on inter-character interaction and conflict, something Baillie does awkwardly in. Women's subterfuge, good or bad? Starts to ...

Don't have a Cow-ley, man! Musings of an artistic, literary, political and intellectual nature. Plus I include a joke-of-the-day. Sunday, November 19, 2006. Don't have a Cow-ley, man! Well, I hope that not too many people have been too impatient about my posting this week. Sorry it's as late as it is. To tell the truth, I don't quite know what to post since whatever I have to say about Hannah Cowley (there's definitely enough to fill most of class time - be warned! 1 'Til Travel Do Us Part. So my questio...

AncientOfDaze: Criticizing the Critics
http://patricktoner.blogspot.com/2006/11/criticizing-critics.html
Musings of an artistic, literary, political and intellectual nature. Plus I include a joke-of-the-day. Sunday, November 12, 2006. Betty Rizzo’s point that Griffith was a journeyman playwright whose success was based on learning from her mistakes and not getting audiences too upset by sticking to uncontroversial material seems to jibe with what we see in. Posted by Ancient of Daze @ 5:53 PM. Yes, I can see some nice applications to Cowley. New Brunswick, Canada. View my complete profile.

Musings of an artistic, literary, political and intellectual nature. Plus I include a joke-of-the-day. Sunday, October 29, 2006. The Busybody: Cent Livres of Fun! I don’t know if it is a good sign or not that I now find I read the play, make some notes and then read the assigned readings and discover that they mention many of the same things I made notes about. This is written after I read the Fushnell article and of course after reading Centlivre’s. Unlike Fushnell, I was surprised at how much. Last wee...

AncientOfDaze: Bluestockings Again!
http://patricktoner.blogspot.com/2006/12/bluestockings-again.html
Musings of an artistic, literary, political and intellectual nature. Plus I include a joke-of-the-day. Monday, December 04, 2006. This week’s plays bring again to mind. The play we began this course with. We seem to have come full circle with Frances Burney’s. The latter as defined by Joyce/Sophia:. Interesting to ponder how many of the male characters we have seen in this course might fit that description, and also how what we in the 21st century would call woman hating doesn’t match this definition.
