The Belarus Fund set up the support scheme to do exactly what it says on the tin; support! Our aim is to offer a small amount of financial support to individuals/families/groups in need. Our objective in doing this; assist them, usually in the short term, with a particular need or project. Who can become a supporter? How much will it cost me? And can my family join in?

Marina Gorka is a small town about an hour and a half drive East of Minsk, the capital of Belarus. The whole project is supported and co-ordinated by the church. Valya has been a wheelchair user for many years after breaking her back in a climbing accident, but was finding it increasingly difficult to propel her heavy manual wheelchair. She dreamed of having an electric wheelchair so she could still get around. Sadly, nothing suitable was available in Belarus. A wonderful generous donor in the UK gave us an electric wheelchair for Valya.

Supporting the people of Belarus affected by Chernobyl. We first met Masha at a summer camp in Belarus in 2003 when she arrived as a little 11 year old who had learned English and would chatter away. Her mum was very ill and soon after died. Her father left her to be brought up by her Babushka (grandmother). Masha is a shining example of children than can face adversity and rise above all the challenges that sadness can bring; she is a credit to her Babushka and is a great help with translations.
