The Gier Spot: You Travel Abroad, You May Notice These 5 Things
http://thegierspot.blogspot.com/2013/04/you-travel-abroad-you-may-notice-these.html
My travels and thoughts. Tuesday, April 30, 2013. You Travel Abroad, You May Notice These 5 Things. There are no doubt many who have traveled far, far more than I have (See: This Guy. What you should picture as you're reading this: Me, thinking deeply over some cured meat, cheese, and bread. 1 People don't care so much about what country they live in; they care more about what standard they can live at. 2 Americans don't travel. Except to Europe. Footnote: Yes, many Americans do travel to Latin America, ...

My travels and thoughts. Monday, March 16, 2015. Will help get you in the mood, and perhaps bring about some teary-eyed nostalgia if you're like me. But anyway, let's get to the movies. Here are my top films of 2014:. 3 Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). 5 Captain America: The Winter Soldier. 8 A Most Wanted Man. 10 A Most Violent Year. Honorable mention (some of these are from 2013, but saw them in 2014 and wanted to recognize them):. Conspicuously Unseen by me:. A Most Wanted Man.

My travels and thoughts. Wednesday, July 25, 2012. The ancient campus at Jingjiang Prince's City. But hell, it wasn't too much money in the long run, and I was determined to not let it ruin the last day of my trip. I was excited to be back in Guilin, and tired of being a grouch. I'd seen some pretty great stuff, in retrospect, and today would be much better than yesterday. Frog-like statues (below left) and the water wheels at Liu San Jie Park. The obelisk statue in Prince's City. Mr Gong and I said our ...

My travels and thoughts. Thursday, May 31, 2012. It's a Funny Thing, Culture (This is from April). China recently celebrated its annual festival of Qingming, a solemn day of reverence to passed ancestors. It's known in English as 'tomb-sweeping day', and it's close proximity to the western holiday of Easter, at least in the Gregorian calendar, does not go unnoticed to me. Posted by Big D/D-Train. Tea and Celluloid: January 2015
http://samesong-differentdance.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
The unexamined life is not worth living, nor are the unexamined movies worth watching. Wednesday, January 21, 2015. The awards season and the accolades it's received have brought Boyhood. Back into the limelight, making that piece I've been putting off for several months finally topical again. Though my circles were pretty universally in love with Boyhood. Boyhood. Was that not clear? So when I started making out the portrait of a quiet, thoughtful, hesitant kid, I found the idea of Mason refreshing....

Tea and Celluloid: July 2012
http://samesong-differentdance.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
The unexamined life is not worth living, nor are the unexamined movies worth watching. Thursday, July 19, 2012. It's been a while since I've posted, but I've had good reason and several unfinished drafts to show for it. It was both our first real vacation together, and our first times in California. For me, it was my first time west of Mandan, ND. I had a blast. Check out my iPhone pictures. And so on July 2, we shipped our things and left Chicago on a train. And I've been in limbo ever since.

The unexamined life is not worth living, nor are the unexamined movies worth watching. Monday, August 13, 2012. A Little Career Daydreaming. I was recently thinking about career and end goals (a perfect storm of a well timed email from KAC and a future-oriented conversation with DS), and I'm fairly confident that this video. Has been my guiding inspiration since I was three or four years old. Isn't it amazing? My introduction to jazz, by the way), plumbing systems. And the Mansueto Library. Things in NYC...

The unexamined life is not worth living, nor are the unexamined movies worth watching. Wednesday, January 9, 2013. One quick thought about HBO's Girls. So, last night I finished Girls. First season. SM and I had started it while in Minneapolis on a quiet night with nothing else to do but peruse my mom's On Demand offerings. Both of us had pretty tepid reactions. Saturday, January 5, 2013. Tea and Celluloid: When is My Big Break?
http://samesong-differentdance.blogspot.com/2013/11/when-is-my-big-break.html
The unexamined life is not worth living, nor are the unexamined movies worth watching. Thursday, November 7, 2013. When is My Big Break? So It's been a while. Too damn high, especially compared to my midwestern roots and life in Chicago only 18 months ago, and I do strongly. Feel like I'm bleeding money every time I leave my apartment. But that's not all of it. All those months of economic uncertainty and hiring freezes represent a lot of lost time for the class of 2008 (and fine, 2009 too). The Gier Spo...

The unexamined life is not worth living, nor are the unexamined movies worth watching. Tuesday, August 16, 2011. One of my friends recently saw The Graduate. For the first time, and sent two of us an email about it. DS and I had two separate but perhaps complementary ideas about the aims and ending of the film. I thought y'all might find this interesting. Below I've pasted our emails, spelling/grammar mistakes and all. What do you think? Date: Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 12:25 AM. To: TS, DS. To me that's the c...

The unexamined life is not worth living, nor are the unexamined movies worth watching. Monday, December 19, 2011. It took me years after watching Fallen. Starring Denzel Washington to listen to The Rolling Stones' "Time Is On My Side". Without my blood curdling. Last night we watched Night of the Hunter. And it's going to be a long time before I hear "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms". The same way again. *shudder* Have you had any songs take on alternative, eerie meanings for you in similar ways? Came ou...

Tea and Celluloid: June 2011
http://samesong-differentdance.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
The unexamined life is not worth living, nor are the unexamined movies worth watching. Saturday, June 25, 2011. Obligatory Tree of Life Post. I'm going to try to make this free of spoilers. I don't think it's possible to spoil this movie, though. Just don't walk out after the first 45 minutes. Okay, so I saw The Tree of Life. The very personal and subjective pain of losing a close family member, contrasted with the expanse of the universe. Father vs. Mother. Grace vs. Nature. Future vs. Present. These we...

Chad, Megan & Lucas
Chad, Megan and Lucas. Monday, January 9, 2012. It's been so long since I've posted on this blog, I don't even know what to say about that. I learned over the Christmas holiday that I had some family followers that I had no idea I had. That, along with the inspiration from my friends, has motivated me to get back on the horse.or the wagon (however you want to look at it). I'm going to try to keep up. Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Can you see it? Sunday, June 19, 2011. Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone.

The Daily Chronicle of a Family of Four. Thursday, April 21, 2011. Let the light shine down! I felt so good and so bad all at the same time! I have my race bibs! Big race is tomorrow. Concentration. Friday, February 5, 2010. Where does the time go? Wow, has it really been 4 months? I feel like it was just yesterday that I sat down to write Drew’s eviction notice blog and already – here we are – 4 months later, living out a dream come true with the most perfect baby ever! OK, I know he’s not the MOST perfect…but he’s pretty darn close! I honestly don’t even know where to begin, so I guess I’ll just go back to Thursday, October 15th and start there! Drew’s heart tones were dropping every time th...

Time and Tide
Saturday, October 27, 2012. Hot, sweaty days in the kitchen. I did it as a young woman once or twice and then never again. It was too much work. Plus my mother HAD to can in order to keep us fed, and for me that carried a stigma into adulthood that resulted in me purchasing a lot of commercially processed goods that would have been nutritionally better for us if they'd been homemade. Well, I never thought I'd be so much my mother's daughter, but I'm coming full circle on this issue. Then there is the nos...
