Karl L. Hughes. Software Engineering, Leadership, and Startups. The Many Roles of a Startup CTO. June 1, 2015 6:45 am. 8220;Chief Technical Officer” sounds like a glamorous title. It’s right up there with “Chief Executive Officer” and “Chief Financial Officer” in the pecking order of a company’s leadership, and at big organizations, it’s quite an honor to hold. At an early stage startup, I’d argue, the distinction is slightly less exciting. So rather than just oversee big picture technology direction or ...

Karl L. Hughes. Software Engineering, Leadership, and Startups. 20 Reasons I Love Distance Running. November 17, 2014 8:00 am. My race season is finished for the year. I’m not one of those sissies who won’t run outside in the winter – I love a good snow run – but I’ve done three half marathons this year, had a couple minor foot injuries (okay, one was major), and lost about 20 pounds.
