The Grumpy Winemaker

Sunday, August 9, 2015. Go West Young Man or How to Get out of the Cold. Dr Walter Clore visits Bonair Winery. Then Ch. Ste. Michelle cancelled red wine contracts in Prosser Flats much to the chagrin of the growers there who thought their grapes were fine – 23. Brix and some pyrazines. (Pyrazines cause vegetative/weedy aromas in red wine.) No problem. At that time the cold climate of Prosser Flats was a mystery, but I think I have solved it. It is caused by two features of geography. Second, the valley b...

The Grumpy Winemaker: June 2015

http://thegrumpywinemaker.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, June 30, 2015. You Can't Fix Stupid. Ron White does a comedy routine where he says you can fix most anything these days. You can even take a woman to the boob store and say, "I want those boobs on this woman." But, "You can't fix stupid.". Take the guy that wanted to buy red grape juice to make red wine. I patiently explained that the juice of red (really black) grapes is clear and that the best he might get is a light rosé from freshly pressed juice. Damn you Ron White! You Cant Fix Stupid.

The Grumpy Winemaker: If We Are Going to Tell the Story, Let's Tell the Whole Story

http://thegrumpywinemaker.blogspot.com/2015/02/if-we-are-going-to-tell-story-lets-tell.html

Thursday, February 19, 2015. If We Are Going to Tell the Story, Let's Tell the Whole Story. The 2015 Washington State Wine Tour Guide just came out. The lead article is Fire and Ice. By Julie H. Case. Why is this article important? Well, a lot of other writers will look at it for content and copy it. I found it a little confusing but other than that it seems accurate. It is written in a style that is meant to be exciting (not instructive) which makes it a little hard to follow. The shield volcano, like M...

The Grumpy Winemaker: Drought in the Rattlesnake Hills - Revisited, Or California It's Not

http://thegrumpywinemaker.blogspot.com/2015/03/drought-in-rattlesnake-hills-revisited.html

Sunday, March 22, 2015. Drought in the Rattlesnake Hills - Revisited, Or California It's Not. What does the California Drought and the Yakima Valley drought have in common? Well, they are both on the west coast and if you are from 'back east' you know that states are only an hour apart. (Out west, counties are sometimes an hour apart usually more.) Beyond sharing the same coast, not much is the same regarding the two droughts. If a reservoir is one foot over filled, how much can that help? The Cascades w...

The Grumpy Winemaker: May 2013

http://thegrumpywinemaker.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 31, 2013. Drought in the Rattlesnake Hills. A customer came through last weekend who was returning from Walla Walla. A tasting room employee there said they felt sorry for the Rattlesnake Hills because our grapes weren't going to be any good this year because of the drought. Drought? Hardly drought stressed. Note the large leaves and long node spacing. Even this old Cabernet vineyard planted in 1968 is alive and well. Don't feel sorry for us. My rain gauge says we've had 8.05 inches i...Droug...

http://mojoclimb.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

The Adventures of Joe and Michelle. Sunday, August 19, 2007. Mt Fernow and Seven Fingered Jack. Michelle and I spent my birthday weekend in the Entiat Mountains of Washington. There are three 9,000-foot peaks in a row (there are only 9 total in Washington) - Mt. Fernow, Seven Fingered Jack, and Mt. Maude. Our goal was to bag all three, but rain on Sunday kept us from getting up Mt. Maude. We hiked in Friday evening to high camp at 5,600 feet. Glacier Peak , Chiwawa Mountain, and Red Mountain to the West.

The Adventures of Joe and Michelle. Monday, August 10, 2009. Vesper Peak - North Ridge and Green Giant Buttress. This last weekend we decided to leave beautiful sunny EWA. And venture to the solar-challenged side of the mountains. Michelle has always wanted to climb Green Giant Buttress near Darrington. So we thought we'd combine it with a little alpine experience on Vesper Peak, taking advantage of the little climbing mecca along the Mountain Loop Highway. We got a few breaks and then our hopes went up!

Grumpy Young Women: every bit as grumpy as the old girls

Monday, 19 September 2011. Cut the crap; I just want to wash and go! Hair We all have it – some more than others, and not necessarily on our heads, but there’s no escaping it. Never mind shoes; hair is the first thing we notice about other people. And first impressions do count, which makes the fact that hair often has a mind of its own more than a little bit of an obstacle when it comes to making oneself presentable to the outside world.
