Ono što izložbenog Ši-cua krasi i ističe jeste njegova negovana, predivna duga dlaka. Sve boje dlaka su dozvoljene ali bela lisa i belina na kraju repa su poželjne. Uši su im velike, visoko usađene, veoma odlakane. Uši psa moraju biti čiste, bez dlaka u njima. Masa tela mužjaka i ženke je od 4,5 do 8,1 kg. Idealna masa tela je od 4,5-7,3 kg. Visina grebena mužjaka i ženke ne prelazi preko 26,7 cm. Dužina tela je veća od visine psa u grebenu.

Oči su crne i oivičene crno, kao i nosna pečurka koja je zaobljena, sićušna i sjajna. Može se dogoditi da dlaka ispod očiju bude crvenkaste boje. Do toga dolazi kada im oči suze i iz razloga što je njihova dlaka bela, to se vidi, za razliku, kod pasa čija je dlaka tamna. Svakodnevnim čišćenjem Borovom vodom dlake ispod očiju, saniraćete problem. Težina bišona prema standardu treba biti od 2,7- 6,4 kg. Visina prema standardu treba biti od 25,4 cm do 27,9 cm.

Ima malu pljosnatu glavu, crn nos, sjajne crne oči i male uspravne uši. Vilice moraju biti pravilne. Leđa su potpuno prava. Za čišćenje dlake oko očiju postoje mnogi preparati, ali je svima nama dostupan 3% rastvor Borne vode. Natopite parče vate ovim rastvorom i blago očistite deo oko očiju. Ovo radite svaki dan. Maltezer je rasa pasa priznata od Međunarodnog kinološkog saveza u grupi patuljastih pasa i pasa za pratnju. Njuška je blago šiljata i treba da iznosi jednu trećinu ukupne dužine glave. Nos bi trebalo da bude crn, sa otvorenim nozdrvama i izraženom stopom. Kad posmatrate svog kućnog ljubimca, mogli bi da steknete utisak da posmatrate grudvicu snega sa tri crne tačkice.
