The Lute's Progress,: March 2015

http://www.thelutesprogress.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

The Lute's Progress,. Being an occasional diary of the goings-on in my Vancouver lute making workshop, written by me, Travis Carey, Lute Maker. Sunday, 1 March 2015. New Lutes, February 2015. I have two new lutes to tell you about today, and honestly, I couldn't be more proud of them. Both in their ways are new models for me, which is always a challenge, and to have them turn out as well as they have done is simply thrilling. Well, I hope I've been able to make that for him. I completed the lute thre...

The Lute's Progress,. Being an occasional diary of the goings-on in my Vancouver lute making workshop, written by me, Travis Carey, Lute Maker. Sunday, 15 February 2015. I needed to shape the sides of this piece as well, to follow the contours of the neck. If it does, then that means the joint in the corner you're pressing the peg box into is not dead flat, and the peg box is rocking a tiny amount in the joint. The joint needs further work, with files, sanding blocks, or a chisel. In the same fashion, ap...

The Lute's Progress,. Being an occasional diary of the goings-on in my Vancouver lute making workshop, written by me, Travis Carey, Lute Maker. Saturday, 19 October 2013. Because You Asked: Making a Lute Mold (6). Hi again. Today's the last installment in the series of how to make a solid lute mold. We've built a big block of wood, carved it down into a shape, drawn rib lines and carved rib facets- all we have to do now is refine these lines and surfaces until we're satisfied. Refining the Rib Lines.

The Lute's Progress,. Being an occasional diary of the goings-on in my Vancouver lute making workshop, written by me, Travis Carey, Lute Maker. Wednesday, 23 May 2012. Hi friends- time for an update. Much has happened in the shop since last I wrote- new lutes flew out the door to their new homes, a lute mold got made, and two more lutes are now well under way. I have much to tell you about, and a long weekend in which to get started, so here goes. A few shots of the 9 rib. The back is of curly maple.

This lute is also available in a 7- or 8-course version, or in a 10- or 11-course version that preserves most of the features of the Small Frei in its present state. 60 cm 6 course lute. This lute is my version of an early-to-mid-16th century instrument. No lutes survive intact from this period, and so the design is my own, based on the earliest known examples and on iconography from the period.

Travis Carey, Luthier. Maker of Renaissance and Baroque lutes. Workshop Blog - The Lute's Progress. It took me a while to assemble the tools, materials and know-how, but I built my first lute - a 7-course, based on Ian Harwood's instructions in Charles Ford, ed., Making Musical Instruments. In the summer of 2002 I traveled to Vancouver and introduced myself to master lute maker Grant Tomlinson in his workshop. I had known about his work for a long time, having seen pictures of his lutes in Opus.
